1776-General George Washington and his ragtag Colonial army defeated the Hessians (professional mercenary soldiers primarily from Germany) at Trenton, New Jersey.
1865-Inventor James H. Nason received a patent for a coffee percolator.
1966-The world celebrated the first Kwanzaa holiday, a 7-day African-centered holiday celebrating common cultural values.
