The Clock Was Set In Motion

At the end of October, the Cottages at Coffeepot received the first freeze.  There were 3 days in October and the first day of November that had low temps in the early morning all below freezing.  This set the clock in motion to get the process of color change in the leaves moving.  My assumption was that our Japanese Maple Tree would be bare well before Thanksgiving.  As of December, the tree is starting to shed but is still rather full!  This includes 5.5 inches of snow that fell on the branches and started to bend them due to the weight of the snow. (See pic below)

Lots of Rain and Snow

Fortunately, the Cottages at Coffeepot in Soldiers Pass West Sedona we also received 5.58 inches of rain as well as snow bringing our year total to 19.37 inches, not counting the snow. So even without monsoon, we have the 4th highest total rainfall in the last 11 years and we still have the whole month of December to add more to the total.

With all that rain, snow and low temps, the Mean Temp was still above November of last year. The HI and LOW temps were also 1º higher than last year.

HI Temp = 77.7º

LOW Temp = 25º

Mean Temp - 48.9º

There have been only 3 days below freezing for a High Temp since 2011, none in 2019 so far.

Japanese Maple in Sedona

The Japanese Maple is still going strong. Usually, by the first couple of days in December, all the leaves are gone. Notice the snow still sitting on the roof! If you didn't see that, you would never know we had any snow.

Hi Sheri- wow your weather bounces around!  That Japanese maple is stunning but you're right, had I not seen the snow on the roof, I would not have known you'd had any snow.

Hi Lottie Kendall

Everyone has a different idea of what an ideal temp feels like.  With low humidity, that temp zone increases. Winters and summers are more bearable.

Hi Myrl Jeffcoat

It sounds a lot like our weather.  After our first freeze at the beginning of November, my husband put out all the freeze protection just to be safe.  One year, we almost lost our Star Jasmine.

Hi Will Hamm,

I am trying to make it easy for people to see how our weather falls by temp zone. Trend lines don't really show the pattern well.

We had a little snow on the grass and rooftops this morning. Our back steps were icy. Hopefully, it will all melt by mid day.

Your weather is fun and always full of good surprises. Your phtotos are always great and a good match with the stories you write.

By the way, I always thought the Weeping Willow was the most unique tree I ever saw until I met the Japanese Maple. The first time I saw one was my neighbor's tree two doors down in Texas in 1998. It's the type of tree that gets my attention and always makes me feel good.

Amazingly...we have had only blinks of snow here and there often not staying on the walks and driveways...that is always subject to change in a blink in Wisconsin !

Hi Kathy Streib,

It is funny about our snow. Even when we have had 2 feet of snow (very rare) it does not linger.

Hi Joan Cox -

No snow on the horizon!  You should see Temps in the mid 50ºs with only a slight chance of rain. Looking forward to meeting you in person!

Hi Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD - We do get a variety of weather. It is generally pretty mild and not at the extremes. I am not a fan of humidity and we don't see this type of weather.

HI Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI, MRP

Thank you!  The Japanese Maple was pretty small when we bought the house. It finally grew tall enough to shade the window in our den from the late afternoon summer sun. We had two Weeping Willows in our backyard.  They offered a lot of shade in the summer but they were very high maintenance. We would have to take about 8 bags of leaves out to the trash on every trip to the home before we moved here full time. The last straw was our 2nd Christmas when the entire backyard was covered in a 2-inch layer of wet leaves.  The pic below is after we had them thinned out.  Every time a slight breeze would come up a branch would drop!

Notice the bags of leaves in this picture!! Ha Ha

Hi Sally K. & David L. Hanson - Good for you!  Sorry to see the Badgers lose last night.  They had a great game plan going in the first half.  I hope to see them in the Rose Bowl against the Ducks.

Hi Sheri:

No snow here (except in the mountains) but plenty of rain which is badly needed.

It's interesting how the weather can change and the patterns from year to year are altered.

Your Japanese Maple really is a stunner!

Jeff
