car

As a realtor, I need gas just like I need food.  Actually I think I need gas more then food.  (SIGH) Unfortunately in this day and age both of those things are going up and going up fast.  So I thought I would search around and see if I could find someways to save money on gas.

This website is a great place to start whether you are driving locally or going on a cross country trek.  It has all the best gas prices all the way across the country.  www.gasbuddy.com

Other ways to save some money on gas:

  • Carpool (won't work for a realtor, but our clients can take advantage)  Try www.carpoolworld.com to find a carpool in your area.
  • Take care of your car.  Just like your body, your car is more energy efficient when it is in tiptop shape.
  • Make sure your tires are properly inflated.
  • Don't do quick starts and stops.  Use cruise control when possible.
  • Don't allow your car to idle.  It takes less gas to start it then to let it idle for a length of time.
  • Use the A/C only when necessary (OK, its always necessary all the time in TX) but you can help the A/C by parking in a shady spot, cracking your windows and using window shades or park in the garage when possible.
  • Take out the extra weight. All that stuff in your trunk is actually costing you gas.  So Jen, you can't use your car as a closet anymore!!!
  • Buy your gas in the morning.  Gas is more dense in the morning (sort of like me before coffee) and apparently denser gas makes for more energy. (OK, so not like me in the morning before coffee).

Hope these tips help everyone in this time of amazingly disgusting gas prices.

Buy your gas in the morning? How interesting. I'm guessing it has to do with cooler temperatures.

All great tips! The problem in our career is that it's hard to carpool when your day involves visiting clients!

Great tips!

I started parking right at the entrance of the shopping mall/centers get a good walk rather than looking for a parking close to the store entrance.

I didn't realize it took less gas to restart the car.  I ususally leave it running when I'm pulling over for a few minutes... but I guess that's mainly to keep the AC going.

We are all looking for ways to save gas, and thanks for the post. However, the tip about buying gas in the morning is an urban myth. The tanks in the ground are insulated from temperature fluctuations. What really matters is when you see tanker trucks delivering their loads in the heat of the day, and that gas could be very warm and less dense. The stations actually will demand a price adjustment if temperature is too high. There is a movement afoot to get stations to adjust the flow rate based on the temperature of the gas in their storage tanks.

I keep telling Ceil if she would clean out her "purse" and get rid of all that junk in her purse it would lighten the load. Of course she sad everything in that purse was "necessary". If it is so necessary why is it that she can't ever find anything in her purse. It must weight five pounds.

OK, Carl, that just cracks me up, especially when I look down at my purse overflowing with diapers, real estate stuff, phone, snacks for the kids etc etc.!!!  And believe me every bit is necessary.  LOL

Amy - I like the picture of your little zoomer on your blog; hope it gets good gas mileage.

I still can't figure out that all a man carries is a wallet and we get along great. From what you just told me you need a suitcase.

Wait until they start weighing purses before you get on the airplane and they charge you by the pounds (ha, ha).

Thanks for a great Blog!
