I know I looked at Plurk... the headless dog image did not endear the site to me... and there was something in the TOS??? but I don't remember what... so I did NOT join. I seldom can say that about any social network I know about... not that I participate... but joining social networks is another matter. Not joining Plurk was an achievement. A woman I follow on Twitter said you can't DM on Plurk so she quit.
I'm kind of committed to AR and Twitter when they are feeling well.
Stacy Plurk is kind of dark... not a happy little blue bird twittering. I am not sure what the images are about.
I did AOL just a bit...
Hi Maureen,
I picked up this post from twitter, just after I got the "over capacity" message... I never even looked at Plurk, too much to keep up with now! I didn't realize there were issues here, since I haven't been in a couple of days. I know my limits, and I think I am just about at them!
I went to AZ to visit my son and my daughter/son-in-law last week. My daughter tried to talk me into Twitter. I've signed onto it but that's as far as it has gone. I'm so tech-stupid anymore that I just don't get it. And with being on my laptop (old and slow, like me), and the issues with AR and Twitter...that didn't help!
Mary I don't think to use Twitter it takes any tech knowledge... for me it just took getting used to. It took me a long time to get used to it. I don't send out a lot of Tweets... but I read a lot there and read a lot that is linked there. It is more surendiptious (?) than reading a feed reader...
It can be frustrating with all the technical difficulties but I still go to see what's going on.. at least a couple of times a day.
I know AR made some changes a couple of weeks ago. I just hope it will be more reliable soon.
Thanks for the comments Mary and Allison.
Maureen, with growth, comes pain. I think the annoyance reflects not seeing the unforeseen. Many network and computing problems CAN BE AVOIDED with better capacity planning. Things happen and you just have to roll with it. Thanks for the comparison with Twitter's problems.
Maureen,
I know the AR folks will appreciate the very kind and delicately-worded sentiments in your post!
I'm still seeing the "Proxy Error" message every so often..
I'll hang in there until they get better...same as Twitter. I tried Plurk but so far I'm not liking it.
Pretty annoying. These proxy server errors are miserable.
A little chicken noodle soup, some long hours bedside, and lots of love will get us through. Today we seem to be feeling much better, and the fever seems to be dropping a bit. Thanks for the get well card Maureen, we feel much better already. :-) Starve the cold and feed the fever, or is it the other way around?? lol~
Maureen,
I think that they are almost over their cold and are mending real well. The card will help I'm sure.

It's been a little frustrating the last couple of weeks with the ups and downs of AR and Twitter. With both being free we probably take them a little for granted and just always figure they'll be there for us. Took a real quick look at Plurk, but didn't like the layout, the mascot or the name ... and the last thing I need now is another social media site!
In the comments on Lenn's post about frustrations with AR Gerry Wunderlich notes that she (Lenn ) took off her personalization on AR. He said Lenn was now using "Classic' AR view." Is that part of the problem? He went on to say " No doubt the extra bandwith for all the fancy stuff doesn't help."
I never have prettied up my AR blog and I get frustrated trying to open some members blogs because the pretty and the widgets slow things down. Does anyone know if that is part of the problem?
Brad I worry about noodles in the servers I think some clear chicken broth might be safer.
I have not seen an error message since yesterday morning... but I have not been on since yesterday morning. Thought about signing on but said "Nah."
Maureen,
As far as the overdone blog personalization goes:
How often do you click on the link, and stare at the background for 2-5 seconds before you get to the page? Too often... "Just because you can, doesn't mean you should."
It happens on a LOT of blogs. How can that be helping the servers? I'd like to see someone with more knowledge than me offer their two cents on it...
Mike I don't visit some blogs on ActiveRain... love the blogger but can't stand the wait to open their blog because of customization and widgets....slooooooooooooooooowing down the page... I really dewidgetized my sidebar because I was concerned about being slow.
I know I had a post up with a poll at the time. I love polls... I would hate to give that content up... but I would if I knew that widget was slowing down my blog.
I would love to see something about whether there is anything WE (personally) can do to help keep AR up and healthy... besides a prayer chain, sending chicken noodle soup, get well cards...etc.
Maureen,
Moderation in all things...
A widget or two isn't a bad thing. Widget Crazy is another thing altogether, IMO. I have a couple, and think they add value without detracting from my insightful content. I vist blogs where, once they load, I can't find the content for all the widgetry, promotion, and disclaimers.
As much as I think all the doo-dahs are cool and I wish I was that creative, I think I'd prefer potential clients didn't have to wait for the message. My experience is, they won't.
Maureen- I forgot to tell you, your post made me smile.
the rapid growth does cause some issues it seems.....we had no pictures the other morning.....they're back now though...hehe
Bryan I don't think of ActiveRain growing rapidly anymore. I think membership seems stalled in comparison to earlier.... I also think although I may be all wet that there is not the same level of participation, but that may just be because of who I know, who I have invited to ActiveRain, who I know is not participating anymore on ActiveRain.
ActiveRain is making changes
Kathy... my blog with the most traffic opens the slowest (I think it is the images) so I can't really figure that out...
thanks all for the comments
