HannahWith Father's Day coming up this Sunday, this year I have a special new understanding for the holiday. This will be my first Father's Day as an actual father. Granted, last year I was a faux father to my furry daughter Hannah, but that fails in comparison to my new role with Isabelle.

As I have began this new thing called fatherhood, I began reflecting back on my father and my grandfathers. I am lucky enough to still have one of my grandfathers still living. We call him Pop-Pop.

Pop-Pop is the one who the whole family calls when there is something wrong with a car, or we need something fixed at the house. I remember last year when my washing machine broke down I didn't know what to do. So, my first call was to my grandfather. As always, he stopped everything he was doing and came over to my home to assist. We spent hours that day moving the washing machine from the tight hole it was in, taking it apart, and looking for the problem. Finally we came to the conclusion that it was something that could not be fixed so I had to go purchase a new one.

While I wasn't happy to have to buy a new one, I was happy to be able to spend the day with my Pop-Pop, to work on a project together and to accomplish our task. As I grow older I have noticed that I have been able to help my grandparents more and more. I do this not because I have to, but because I want to.

Pop-PopLast evening I called my grandparents to see what they were doing because we wanted to go spend time with them and allow Isabelle to enjoy being around her Great-Grandparents. While there, I was actually able to assist them by moving their computer out of the old desk and setting it back up in the new desk. I cherish the times with my grandparents.

Over the next few years I want my daughter to be able to spend more time with them because there is something about their generation. A sense of respect, a sense of responsibilty, and a sense of committment that sometimes lacks.

Below is a video of Isabelle with her Great-Grandfather/Pop-Pop that was made on June 2nd. She was two weeks old at the time. We were over at my parents home to celebrate my grandparents 54th wedding anniversary. You can see from the video how much Isabelle loves her Great-Grandfather and enjoys his singing! I hope that my wife and I are able to live that long to be able to share 54 wonderful years together and also with our beautiful daughter Isabelle.

Jeremy ~ How wonderful that your grandparents get to enjoy your beautiful daughter! I was so glad that three of my grandparents were around for my childrens' births.

My kids always used to call my Dad Pop-Pop, but once they hit the teen years they switched to Grandpa.  Now he gets to hear my sister's boys call him that.

Jeremy - I was very close to my grandfather on my mom's side, who passed away when my son was just five months old.  He was 93.  I still miss him dearly when I think of him.  I haven't met anyone like him before or since.  Here is a post I wrote about him a few months back if you are interested in reading it:
