#CharlotteMLS2021 ‘Mrs. Mayor, We Have a Soccer Team!’
A growing sport, moving into a major growing city…
The market has quietly been tested over the past 4-5 years and over the past year, engaged with Tepper Sports to ascertain that a successful Major League Soccer (MLS) franchise could be created here in Charlotte. Equitable investment and development, teamed with a great business decision will intentionally deliver more than ‘lots of fun’ that a major league soccer franchise will bring to the area.
Charlotte has become the last of the 30 MLS expansion team cities. With the public partnership and $110M tax revenue to bring this to fruition, lots of criticism has followed. Many feel that the talks should have been made public but, when you’re talking about negotiations and competing with other major cities for the last MLS franchise, public discussions would NOT be wise.
Recruiting larger headquarters, like the recently welcomed Honeywell, will be beneficial for Charlotte, moving forward. Small business owners are concerned that the public now needs to be engaged so that we can engage in small business placement in and around the new stadium area. The city has agreed that now is the time to bring in the public for developmental discussions.
Tepper's favorite part of the day, making the call to Mayor Liles, "Mrs. Mayor, We Have a Soccer Team!"
Tepper has committed to a soccer headquarters at the old Eastland Mall site. This will change the face of the area around the new practice field immensely. A larger music and theatre venue is a part of the vision, as well as an overture of incredible restaurants and more. Obviously, this is of serious interest to those who live in the area. What potential we shall see!
On a side note, the Charlotte Hornets marketing team attempted to change Charlotte’s abbreviation from CLT to CHA and has failed in doing so! MLS started using CHA and, after hearing concerns from the locals, has already acknowledged that our city won’t support a change. So, CLT it will be on all of their publications moving forward and changed within the next 48 hours - another WIN for the city!
