The Super 8 Meme has been working its way through Active Rain, and I've been immune to it thus far. I guess having four kids does that to your immune system!
Well, after being tagged three times, I finally caught the bug. Thanks, ladies:
Cynthia Tilghman...who is fascinated with Marilyn Monroe and wanted to be a ballerina.
Eleanor Thorne...who featured an awesome local artist and revealed a fascinating family history.
Pam Pugmire...who was a finalist in the Miss Idaho pageant and has 6 kids.
So here goes........
1. Who is your favorite musical artist?
Gosh...that's a hard one to narrow down. Nothing beats the Beatles as far as songwriting output. Radiohead's OK Computer is, in my estimation, the greatest piece of musical art ever. But if I had to pick a favorite...for longevity, artistic output and social impact I have to give kudos to U2.
2. Who is your favorite artist?
I love Picasso. It doesn't matter if it's a bike seat with handlebars, doodling, or Guernica. I love it all. He's got a wicked rad website, by the way.
3. Who is your favorite blogger?
My wife. I know that's a wierd one, but I seriously can't wait for each new post. Even if I was there, I love seeing her photography and the way she shares.
(If I had to pick someone on Active Rain, I would say Jason Crouch because of his great writing plus an ability to connect people)
4. If you could meet anyone (alive or dead), who would it be and what is the most interesting thing about them?
Dead...C.S. Lewis. I think his reflections on grief (in his memoir of his wife's death by cancer) and his reflections of how he 'found God' via the arts (Surprised By Joy) are some of the most candid and intellectually honest books around. What I would give to be his student. Interesting fact: he dedicated Screwtape Letters to his friend J.R.R. Tolkien...who returned the favor by not liking the book!
Alive...N.T. Wright. I guess I'm fascinated by Anglicans who use their initials, but N.T. (or Tom) is also an author. He's the Bishop of Durham and considered by some to be the premier historical scholar on the New Testament. His works have totally opened up worlds of understanding for me. If you're sick of the typical conservative/liberal divides or wondering what history has to say about truth in a postmodern world where truth is relative, this is the guy to turn to. Brilliant. Interesting fact: He's personal friends with Marcus Borg, another historian and scholar that rejects the one belief that Tom holds dearest - the physical resurrection of Jesus.
Honestly, my love of theology and philosophy is so deep that I could bore you for hours and hours.
5. What did you want to be when you grew up?
Bruce Willis.
I am completely serious.
I remember writing an essay in the 7th grade about my my future where I basically just imagined what Bruce Willis' life must have been like. His album (I am not making this up) played a significant part in my decisions to follow Jesus and to be a musician. Good luck finding that album. I have the cassette, but no cassette player!
6. What is the most interesting piece of trivia you know?
Willie Nelson once smoked weed on the roof of the White House.
7. If you could live in any point in history what would it be and why?
Oxford in the 1950s...as a student of C.S. Lewis.
8. What is the most interesting job you have ever held?

JOEY, I love CS Lewis. I have read several of his books lately. I actually just ordered Mere Christianity from Amazon (it came today). I have read the Chronicles of Narnia 4 times, 2 times to my children as they were growing up and then twice as an adult. I just recently finished Perelandra. I had read Out of the Silent Planet years ago. I could go on and on.
When I did my meme I considered him but chose Dr. Dobson as he helped me raise my strong willed daughter.
PS I love U2 also!! It was our daughter that turned us on to them.
Marchel: Perelandra is a very unique book. Did you know that it was Lewis' favorite (of his own)? I just found out there's a book of his that I haven't read: The Discarded Image. I'm going to check it out, as he basically predicted the shift from modernity to postmodernity that we're going through now (it's a book about the transition from medieval to modern times). I read the Chronicles probably every two years. That's not just kid-lit.
Joey, I love CS Lewis too.....loved your MeMe. I seriously can't imagine why - with four children - you haven't had time! Hellllooo.... ;-)
I've been tagged three times or so - and still haven't done this. I don't like being "restricted" to writing about specific things - know what I mean? I like to just spill the beans so to speak. ;-) I've already done that twice, and am having difficulty at biting the bullet...who knows? time will tell. ;-)
Teri: I love being 'restricted'. Even when I was in the band, I was better at taking an idea and running with it than I was at consistently coming up with fresh ideas. Thanks for visiting!
JOEY, I did know that about Perelandra. I just read Essential C. S. Lewis (C.S. Lewis Classics) by Lyle W. Dorsett and then sent it on to my son. He is searching for answers right now and C S Lewis has some great answers. I didn't realize he was an Atheist before he was a Christian. I just read a book called Emeny Territory - the Christian struggle in the modern world by Andrew Walker. It was written in 1987 but he some things just don't change. He is the founder of the CS Lewis Centre.
Joey, I've loved U2 since their first American single. Their shows are inspiring and their sound is unique. They always come up with something new.
Willis? "Respect Yourself?" Really? Ok, Joey.
My Joey... I've seen U2 a bunch of times and they rock. Almost better in person than real life. I listened to them giving birth and it really did make it all better for me. As to that other question - if you just twist it a bit and ask, 'who did I want to sleep with date when I grew up?', I would also answer Bruce Willis. (sorry, but for a few days, that was true).
Great MEME. Very cute kids! I need to start a family blog, but just haven't done it.
C.S. Lewis is one of my favorites. It's funny how you read these and you think, "Why didn't I think of that?" One of my favorite quotes by C.S. Lewis
A man who is eating or lying with his wife or preparing to go to sleep in humility, thankfulness and temperance, is, by Christian standards, in an infinitely higher state than one who is listening to Bach or reading Plato in a state of pride. C. S. Lewis
WOW a Rockstar and philosopher, what a combination!
Eleanor: I insisted that my 6th grade girlfriend call me David after his Moonlighting character.
Marchel: Brian McLaren wrote a great book called Finding Faith and N.T. Wright wrote another called Simply Christian. Both of these are like the 'Mere Christianity's for my generation. Maybe you should check 'em out.
Elaine: Okay, I gotta know: Did you know that the song "Respect Yourself" was on there because you're a fan, or did you look it up? Remember the Seagram's commercials where he'd play harmonica and sing?
Hi Joey, Thanks for completing your assignment and you did it in a thorough and entertaining format. I'll give it an A. :0) Ok, how did Willie Nelson get on the roof of the White House to smoke a joint? There had to be a serious connection with someone with lots of pull. ???
Joey - I HAD to put that song in the radio show I produced at the time. Not a great cover, but he had fun with it! May I suggest chcking out The Staple Singers version? (music snob alert!)
Joey - I feel truly honored that you chose me as your favorite blogger here on ActiveRain. I need to check out your wife's blog - she has been blessed with an awesome talent for photography! I hope you and your family are doing well. Let's talk again sometime soon.
Cynthia: I'll give you three guesses which president let THAT happen.
Elaine: Actually, I didn't like that one and will check out the original. I was into Youngblood, Under the Boardwalk and Secret Agent Man. Keep in mind, I was 12. I had forgotten your background in radio. You know Tom Plant has a radio background?
Jason: Let the record show that the antimeme idea came from Jason Crouch.
I will accept the Willis because the man was living a dream and having a lot of fun with that album. However, if you ever mention liking Don Johnson's "Heartbeat," I will drive to Hemet and smack you upside your head.
Yes, I know about Tom, but I don't know where he worked.
