Sedona Weather Recap Final for 2019

2019 Final Category Sumary

Everybody has a different threshold of what they think is a good temperature range.  The above chart is designed to show you different temperature ranges and how the days fall in those ranges.

Note: There were no days with a high below 32º. This means that snow melts every single day if we have any.  Because humidity is felt in both cold and warm temperatures, the temps do not feel as hot or cold as other areas of the United States.  We get very low humidity overall. That means no "sticky" weather or "frigid to the bones" weather!

December seemed a lot colder than previous Decembers. However, This December was only

2º to 3º cooler than last year.  It was all about the cold front coming in from California.  There were more cloudy and rainy days with some snow.  This made it feel like it was colder but not by much.  The cold fronts did diminish the "Days with Sunshine".  Sedona did not hit 300 days, but we get to 296 days with sunshine.  This is still a win in my book!

As for the rain... even though the monsoon did not produce much rain, we had 23.47 inches, which is the second-highest total to the 25.92 inches in 2016. Our snow totals were unsurpassed due to the high total in February of 25.92 inches! Sedona experienced a total of 32.37 inches for the year. Most people would not think that was possible...but it did happen!

Overall, I think our area has received plenty of precipitation and all our vegetation is green.  Even though there may be other areas of the state that may be experiencing drought, Sedona is doing fine right now.

Here are the other charts...

HI Nina Hollander - It is always nice to say we hit 300 days of sunshine but really, but anything close is pretty darn good. Even at 275 days, that is 23 days a month with sun. I am good with that. Days and days of no sun start to get to me.

Hi Brian England - Even when I lived in SoCal, we would get 2 months of "June Gloom".  It would burn off in the afternoon but that is not the same as watching the sunrise.

I can't disagree with that Joe Pryor.   There is something special about seeing the sunrise.  Happy New Year!

Sheri & Rick, I started doing this too, as I get similar requests.  How do you determine if it was a sunshine day if half the day was sunny, half was cloudy?

Hi Joan Cox - First of all there is no real hard evidence on sunshine.

There are so man different ways to calculate days with sunshine. Yuma AZ is said to have the most days at 90% from sunrise to sunset that reaches the ground. This is measured over many years. It also measures the amount of cloud cover. A sunny day has up to 30% cloud cover.  40% to 70% of cloud cover is considered partly sunny. 80% of day... it is cloudy.

Rick thinks it is pretty subjective.  It is almost like saying there will be a 30% chance of rain. Some will tell you that it means that 30% of the area will have rain.  But what does it really mean?  What if no part of the area gets rain?

Rick doesn't look at the sunrise or sunset.  Keep it simple.  Does the day feel cloudy or sunny?

Hi Rick & Sheri, thanks for this explanation.   I was working on --- how much of the day was cloudy or sunny, and that was what the day was --- simple.

I don't think we'd miss a few days short of 300. I've always been a fan of a high-desert climate. And yet, look where I call home. Lol.

Good Tuesday morning, Sheri. We have a rainy day in Maryland and Chef Dolores just got out a new umbrella to take to her luncheon appointment.

Hi Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD - I get it!  When I lived in SoCal, the "June Gloom" lasted from May into July! I was actually surprised at the difference of how I felt when I could see the sunrise most of the time.
