How Dark Is Dark?  Thoughts About Nights In the Country.

It is beautiful at night in more rural areas.  You will see more stars than you have ever seen before.  It is truly an amazing sight when I go outside and look up on a clear night. There are more shooting stars to wish upon and a clearer view of the constellations.  The reason for this is that the further away from the lights of the city and more heavily populated suburbs the less artificial light is put out into the night. When you are closer to any highly populated area the lights from buildings, street lighting, and other man made structures masks the night sky and does not allow the much further light sources from the stars to shine through.

One of the things that many potential home buyers in a rural area don't think about is the fact that there are not street lights on every block.  When you are driving at night it can seem very dark and intimidating.  Many transfers to the area report that it is scary to them to be without the familiar street lighting of their city or suburban neighborhoods.  There is a certain isolation that is felt that can be calming and feel great to some but can really upset others.

If you are planning a move from the city or suburbs to a rural area, make sure you visit the area a night.  Find a place to park and spend some time there, don't just drive through.  Feel the night, listen to the sounds, and see how the dark affects you.  If like many of us, you find you enjoy the beauty of the night then move forward with your plans to buy in a rural location.  But if you are worried that the lack of lighting will upset you you may want to rethink the country life.

If you are thinking a a move to the Greater Hudson Valley of New York you can still find the perfect piece of paradise for you as we have a variety of neighborhoods to choose from.  Maybe it would be better for you to look in a village, neighborhood development, or one of our local small city locations. This way you can feel the comfort nighttime lighting yet be close enough to enjoy our night sky whenever you want simply by heading a short distance down the road.

Hi Barbara,

With the clouds last night it must have been black outside.  Keep on studying it is almost over.

Hi Paddy,

Maybe you should give people that post when they move in to the area, this way you get more listings  (Just kidding).  Nice post.

We get the masked sky here being near NYC.  It is amazing when I look at the sky when I am in other areas. The intensity and number of stars.

All the best!

Very funny but as a Buyers Agent I want people to think before they buy so they buy in the right place and refer me to other buyers.  I know what you mean about the masked sky closer to the city.  I saw a lot less stars at night in Bergen County NJ than I do here. Thanks for the comment.

I know what you are talking about Paddy, When I lived in the country I could see thousands of stars, but light pollution from the city blocks out all but the brightest stars. I'm glad that you are enjoying country life.
