According to Realtor.org (The National Association of REALTORS official website), there are currently 1,252,618 members (as of May 31, 2008).  Total membership for 2006 was 1,357,732.  Membership is currently down approximately 8% from 2006.

Although it is disappointing to see that membership is down, I believe that if the number of transactions and NAR membership decrease fairly relatively there will be enough business to go around.  May & June 2008 have been my best two months in this business (since 2004).  Business comes in waves, so your business may come when the market is "slower".  If you love this business like I do, hang in there...We will be the ones that survive the ups & downs.

Ive seen some pretty scathing articles about NAR recently.  I guess this, in part, is the result.  That and the number of agents that are now flipping burgers or whatever because of the market.

On another blog I asked the REAL difference in a REALTOR and a licensee.

I was a REALTOR at one time and saw no distinct advantage to it. I still network with all licensees, still refer clients out and accept clients in, I adhere to a higher code of ethics than that of NAR and I am still closing deals.
