I received a phone call yesterday from Sirius/XM Radio. My subscription in my car had expired, so they turned off my service.
To be honest, I hadn't even noticed. I tend to listen more to the collection of my own CDs which I have stored on the car's hard drive. While I do listen to Sirius/XM (I love deep tracks, Jazz, Blues and the Beatles Channel, Tom Petty's Hidden Treasures)... it had been a while.
They asked if I'd like to renew and I casually answered "I don't know.... what am I paying?" They told me that the annual fee had risen slightly, and the new annual fee would be $252.00. It's a good thing I wasn't drinking anything, 'cause if I had been, I would have done a classic Danny Thomas spit-take.
"HOW much?"... "$252.00".
"Uh... no... I'm not interested... at that price, let it expire." The woman at the end of the line didn't expect that response... and had to audibly flip through her scripts... while she was looking for an answer, I asked "Are there any other less expensive plans?"... she said that there were, and she scrambled to give me a quote of $240.00.
I told her that I had no interest in paying that much money for Satellite Radio... and to please cancel my subscription. At this point she asked for a moment to talk to her supervisor. When she came back she said they can offer me a $99/year subscription for all the same services.
I accepted. I'm sure I'll have to go through the same dance next year. I'm looking forward to it.
