According to the website Niche, my high school, Holton-Arms, was recognized as the best school in Maryland. I am incredibly proud of the education that Holton gave me and my daughter. It is a single sex, non-denominational school that starts in 3rd grade and goes through high school. One of the many things that sets Holton apart is its diversity. Families with many different cultures, values and religion choose to send their daughters to Holton because it is a single sex school which does not have a particular religious orientation. Holton counts among its notable alumnae a princess of the Jordanian royal family, Christine LaGarde, former director of the International Monetary Fund, Julia Louis-Dreyfuss, the actress from VEEP and Seinfeld and Patricia Richardson, actress from Home Improvement plus Shelley Moore Capito, the Senator from West Virginia.
I should also give a shout out to the Landon School, where my son went, which came in 5th on the list, and my local public high school, Walt Whitman, which came in 9th. Our local elementary school, Burning Tree, came in 87th in the entire state and the middle school, Thomas Pyle, came in 94th. Clearly, Bethesda has a lot of great schools to choose from.
Here is some information about why Holton is so awesome! Holton offers some exceptional programs to its students, encouraging them in STEM studies and global perspectives., recognizing that Holton graduates are members of the wider world beyond the Holton gates. My daughter majored in math and economics at Boston College because of the strong STEM foundation she received at Holton. Now she is working on her MBA at the University of Chicago.
Holton's sights are high and the goal is clear: preparing Holton girls for fluency in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics so that they are prepared to innovate, advocate, and harness the power of STEM fields for the good of the world.
Girls enjoy a 10-year sequence of project-based encounters with STEM disciplines, from the Design Technology program in Lower School to engineering in Upper School.
Students are supported by state-of-the-art technology and facilities as they develop skills of data collection, research, analysis, design, and fabrication.
In 2014, after my daughter graduated, Holton established the Global Scholar honors designation for students with an interest in global issues and international affairs. Upper School students interested in this program take a specialized global curriculum, including four years of world language study, the Global Issues and Perspectives course, participation in a Holton Junior Journey such as to Costa Rica, an African country or India, and completion of a capstone Senior Project focusing on one or more of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Holton annually hosts exchange students from China and sends some of its own students to study there. This global perspective starts in the lower grades from third grade on, when the girls dive into design thinking and global engagement, whether using 3D printers to bring their ideas to life or partnering with classrooms across the globe.
