The Farmer's Share... did you know?

Have you ever wondered how much money the Farmer is making when you purchase a loaf of bread, milk, or bacon? I've always been amazed at just how little they make for their hard work. It's no wonder that the little guy has almost disappeared from farming. It takes a mega farm to make a profit in farming these days. Just look at these numbers.

The Farmer's ShareI think it's a real eye opener to see what the hard working farmer earns on their labor and willingness to gamble everything they have year after year. I have never been involved in agriculture but I do live in an agriculture State so the farmer's welfare directly affects our States welfare.

On some level, Bob, that's quite scary. Who would want to farm?

This is fascinating, Bob...and very sad. Farming is labor intensive, so the rewards should be commensurate.

Nina, in regards to your comment, I have wondered the same thing and thus asked that of many of my family members who are farmers. The answer always relates to their connection to the earth and the reward in seeing something they planted spring to life. It seems they get their reward in ways other than profit.

Interesting information, Bob. My husband and his sister inherited his mother's farm in Iowa and they have a tenant on it. I think the days of the small farmer as we knew them are gone. You have to have a good business head to make any kind of living. Gwen Banta I agree with you about their connection to the earth and that kind of lifestyle.

Morning Bob.

I guess they make up for it by volume, still that's a short margin.  Is the price you're showing net, after expenses?

Nina Hollander it's almost impossible for a young person to start a career in farming these days. Land is so expensive most of them rent land around here if they can find it. One piece of equipment, a combine, can cost a half a million dollars. They truly must love the earth to be dedicated to farming.

Bob "RealMan" Timm hi Bob... I've been watching tons of farm land in the immediate Charlotte area disappear for 20 years now and new subdivisions pop up in their place. Farmers are retiring and their kids just don't want to farm... so they make a ton of money selling the land.

Gwen Banta my heart jumps for joy when I see you here. Living in a rural State I have great respect for the men and women of agriculture. You are correct, they must have a love of the earth to take the chances they do in hopes of a profit.

That is absolutely correct Kathy Streib . Farming has become one of the most tech savvy occupations there is.

Good question James Dray . I will have to review the article. Still, can you imagine being a young person desiring to get started in this occupation?

Thank you, Bob. And thank you also for reaching out regarding my recent accident. I am getting physical therapy and therapy for PTSD, so every day is an improvement. Regarding farmers, yes, I come from a long line of farmers in upstate New York. My dad did not carry on the tradition but he did have a huge garden from which we got all of our vegetables. Of course growing fruit was a challenge in that area, but we always had berries. My brother and I had to work the garden when we were kids, so I know firsthand that it is VERY difficult work. I can’t imagine what it would be like to run an actual farm, taking care of crops and animals, and fitting that all around a school schedule. I have great admiration for farmers!

Hi Bob - the sad financial reality of farming was known to me but in this kind of detail.  While I am not surprised, seeing the facts reflect how oblivious we can be at times.  I imagine that is true of so many things in life.  I digress....

Gwen Banta if I lived in your area I would have marched right over there and eliminated the threat. I totally understand the PTSD aspect aspect, it would be very hard to trust any dog bigger then a chihuahua from now on out.

I love that you have a farm background, it explains why you are so down to earth in your thinking.

Michael Jacobs considering the huge cash outlay that is needed these days to farm and the thin margin of profit it's amazing any young people can or want to get into it. They really have to have a love of the land.

Thank you, Bob. It makes me sad that I am now afraid of many dogs, because I have had dogs my entire life. I filed a report with animal services but I still haven’t heard back. This is Los Angeles so I can’t imagine how many reports they have to deal with, but the dogs that attacked me have attacked before, so the threat remains. It’s criminal and shameful!
