1825 – After no presidential candidate receives the majority of electoral votes in
the presidential election of 1824, the United States House of Representatives elect John Quincy Adams as President of the United States.
1861 – Jefferson Davis is elected the Provisional President of the Confederate States of America by the Confederate convention at Montgomery, Alabama.
1942 – Year-round Daylight saving time is instituted in the United States as a wartime measure to help conserve energy resources.
1964-The Beatles perform live on The Ed Sullivan Show to a record audience of 73 million viewers. CBS received over 50,000 requests for tickets for the show’s 700 seats. The Fab Four's first set included “All My Loving,” “Til There Was You”, and “She Loves You”. During one camera pan, a caption under John Lennon read: “SORRY GIRLS, HE’S MARRIED”. The Beatles closed the show with “I Saw Her Standing There” and “I Want To Hold Your Hand”.
