Happy Valentine's Day - What's Love Got to Do with It?
Tomorrow I will, with a heavy heart, be celebrating the life of a dear friend who suffered sudden cardiac arrest last week and at 58, left his loving wife a widow at a very young age. My heart aches terribly for my friend left behind, dealing with tremendous grief. Just thinking of Valentine’s Day and what it means to us in our younger years (and for most of our lives), must be overwhelming to many among us.
In recent years, I’ve become more aware of those like my friend who may no longer have significant others in their lives to celebrate the day. While Valentine’s Day is a celebration of love, it is the perfect opportunity for us to reconnect with the true meaning of this day. It is about love, sharing and giving.
Love is what makes us human; love is what makes life worth living. If you think about it, nothing else really matters. The size of our homes, our bank accounts, the number of likes we get on Facebook, the brand of our car – none of those things really matter.
Let us use the occasion of Valentine’s Day for us all to focus on what we can actually give of ourselves. It is really not about us – it is about others and what we can do for others, give to others and how much love we can share with others.
Here are a few great quotes for Valentine's Day...
Love is our true destiny. We do not find the meaning of life by ourselves alone - we find it with another.
~Thomas Merton
They invented hugs to let people know you love them without saying anything.
~Bil Keane
A heart is not judged by how much you love, but by how much you are loved by others.
~Frank Morgan
