Throwback Thursdays...Spring Babies

We’ve been out checking for nests, not just bluebird nests but others as well. There are many that we can see on our walks but they’re just high enough to keep prying eyes away.

This is a Moorhen nest from Green Cay Wetlands in Boynton Beach, FL

I was reminded of all of the nests that we would see when we were in South Florida and walked at Green Cay Wetlands.

Spring was so exciting because of all of the birds and reptiles (Barbara Todaro) who called the Wetlands home. One of the most prolific was the American Moorhen.

It was fun discovering them on our morning walks. Many were on the ground, visible from the boardwalk.

Keep your eyes open when you’re out on your walks!  You never know what you might see!

Kathy,

I had no idea about Moohen birds.  Thank you for sharing that loveliness with us this morning.  Spring is bounding forth in our neck of the woods.  A

Hi Kathy Streib - It is always fun to see the birds building their nests. Finding them in unusual places is also fascinating. I didn't know how many nests were in my tree in the courtyard until all the leaves fell.  There are 5 right now for future residents!

Kathy, it is a bit early for nests around here.  Woke this morning with 8 degrees, and ocvered with snow.    We are seeing 2-3 storms bringing snow every week right now.  I am READY for spring.

Kathy that does not look like a very safe place to build a nest so close to the ground.

Kathy a few years back a mamma dove decided to build a nest on a plant close to the front door.  Why I don't know as the front walk way has a lot of activity all day long. At times we'd go out and she might now be there - or out getting food.  We tried our best to stay away but I did have to take a few picks of the babies from time to time.  So fun to be on the look out for bird nest....well....birds in general.  Right now we've got a very busy and loud Mockingbird that sings all the time.  She's sits high up on our fireplace and we can hear her thoughout the house....very cool!

Donald Urschalitz they look like sandhill cranes, and I love them.

Myrl Jeffcoat I wonder if much has changed since the invasive Burmese Python has invaded the area.

Scott Godzyk I hear the beach calling your name.

Brian England I bet you could find some on your hikes!!!

Barbara Todaro We do have gators here and I'm sure they're in the lake where we walk but not like Florida!  The only thing about the warmer weather coming...snakes.

Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD it becomes a little village or community of walkers, doesn't it.

Carol Williams both. The boardwalk isn't that far above the water and often the birds were kind enough to build their nests close to the boardwalk.

Hi Kathy:

There is definitely alot of courting activity going on around here - the birds, rabbits, squirels - and no doubt some next building although I have yet to set any. What fun to see these nests!

Yikes Joan Cox too cold for me!!! Hope Spring comes soon for you.

Sharon Lee I think of you when we see our bluebirds!!

George Souto I agree. We once watched helpless to do anything as a bird's nest was being flooded when they had to let more water into the Wetlands area.

HI Anna Banana Kruchten Broker/Owner, CRB, CRS we have a lot of Mockingbirds here...the state bird of Texas. Larry hates it when they eat the live mealworms that he puts out for the bluebirds.

Barbara Todaro I know you do but I won't get near a snake.

Jeff Dowler, CRS we pulled up to a store in a small shopping strip and there in the sign above the door, in a little space was a bird's nest.

Not too many nests where we usually walk...the mall. LOL

Too cold for outside walks here...although we did walk the neighborhood today and it was only 28 degrees.
