The Importance of a Blog Footer

By
Mortgage and Lending with Arizona Wholesale Mortgage Inc.

confusedI think I'll take a moment to talk about blog post footers.

Because we all tend to talk about many different topics when we post on ActiveRain, it can be confusing for the poor Googlebot to determine what our blogs are all about.  One day I am talking about Arizona Home Loans and the next day, I may be complaining about some new rules that may be affecting the mortgage business.

So how does Google determine what our blogs are truly about?  (Hey Google, my blog is all about Arizona Home Loans and Arizona Mortgages.)

Well, one way is to include- in every blog post- a footer that uses your keywords.  Don't be boring; write a different one every day.  (That will also help with any possible problems with Google's duplicate content filter.)  No, I don't know for a fact that duplicate footers will be penalized by Google, but I always take the safe route and just use common sense.  If you don't like this advice, please don't use it.

[ Edit:  I actually just found a featured post, minutes after posting this, which uses a footer.  It is Dr. Ziagos, talking about the economics of real estate transactions. ]

But if you feel like commenting that "duplicate footers won't hurt your rankings" or that footers are of no use:

A.) Sorry, but you don't know that.  Google's algorithm is the biggest secret on the web, and is always changing, evolving...so nobody really knows anything.  Except, of course, the people at Google and they ain't tellin'.

B.) So go ahead, use the same footer on every post.  I am going to do the common sense thing and end each post with a different footer, so, to the Googlebot, it will appear that each one of my articles is 100% unique and contains the keywords that I want.

So with that, I bid you good-day.  Now check out my footer.  Make sure that Googlebot knows what this blog is all about...really:

Karen,

For whatever it's worth, I give you top marks for SEO knowledge and creatively trying to leverage that knowledge with your footer.

But putting a footer at the end of every blog will quickly eliminate any "pull marketing" appeal your blogs have for consumers. I understand the line of thought that it may help consumers find you better via search results, but I wager it will be a turn off to many more.

I'm sorry for being a buzz-kill - I just wanted to share my impression.

Okay Jay.  How many posts per page?  Maybe I should just nail 3 out of 6?  Every other post?

It's not a buzz-kill.  I use this blog for its linking power, moreso than to draw consumers here.  In fact, if you search for Chandler AZ Mortgage in Google, you will find my profile, not my blog.  I think my profile is pretty nice, and it ranks so highly, because it's working off my blog power.  Get it?  I don't think blogs themselves are so great for rankings, but my blogs shoot my "main sites" through the roof.

Check it out.  That's cause o' me blog.

I can understand the buzzkill comment.  That is the pull of the blog, the lack of in your face advertising.  However, the power of SEO is what gets in the consumer in the first place.  It would be quite interesting to theorize the equilibrium between enough footers to grab google and not too many to turn off the consumers it gives to us....

The challenge of a different footer everytime is fun.  But just as daunting to me as keyword rich text when I already have a tough time writing.

Karen,

Thanks again for your help. It is very easy to forget when writing a blog that the search engines will be pooring over it looking for relavancy.

Changes will have to be made.

In my experience varying your text is good, it is a known fact that the same text linking back to your site is a bad thing, varying it is proven to work and I work on mnay sites using this technique for many clients.

I can tell you this with conviction - If you are blogging on the FREE Wordpress platform (www.wordpress.com) - they would consider your footer above as spam. You wouldn't hear anything about it unless people reported it to them - happened to me - very similar to yours.

The folks at wordpress are polite - referring you to the guidlines - but insistent to lose the promo.

This is a tough one, Footers are pretty standard, along with properly named categories.  Take Google official Blog, it has categories pasted all over with Google on every link.  That's pretty spammy.  However, they don not have footers.

If you footer is genuine in an attempt to inform not just toss in keywords then I don't see problem. The rule of thumb is if it's good for people it's good for Google.

I would say the footer is better suited in aforum than in your blog, only because your blog has that information already, while a forum would may not.  As with all things Internet, error on the side of caution and courtesy.

To The Harper Team:  You must be talking about if you HOST at WP? right?  Because I only use my own domain names.

Lynda-- Just look at my search engine results.  That's where SEO opinions go to die.  :-)

Deborah- as usual, thank you.  You're a doll.

I agree Tom.  I think I provided a valuable article and added a footer.

Now check this out:  A couple of days ago, I was nowhere to be found in Colorado (search results).  After I posted my footer, all of a sudden.  Bam!  Search for Colorado Mortgage Company in Google and there I am.  (AZWM.com.)

This happened just since I posted my footer that is of so much debate.  Again, a blog is like an information engine that takes its info from the posts.  That little footer just landed my MAIN SITE (that I linked to from my footer) onto page one of Google.

This is the part that I don't understand:  Everyone is concerned about my blog being "spammy", but if a consumer is reading my SEO articles, than they probably aren't looking for a mortgage.  I will write the SEO articles, add footers, and continue to help my site in the rankings while consumers continue to ignore my blog.  (Unless they are looking for a mortgage and SEO advice; then they really have found the right blog!)

You're simply taking a different avenue - one that's been beneficial for you. If you want to exclude the benefits of pull marketing and strictly focus on higher page ranking, more power to you (your results obviously speak for themselves).

But know that a customer can't relate to a page ranking like they can to a well written and spam-free blog. In my humble opinion, your approach is like putting the chicken (page ranking) before the egg (blogging). If it's working for you (it sure seems to be) then keep running with it. Others (like me) will prefer to go about the process a little more holistically. Different strokes for different folks. :-)

This is new information for me. I haven't been doing the exact same footer every time, but I haven't been very creative with it either. Thanks!
