Hello,

Today I have a question for all SEOs and website developers. I will be grateful if somebody sheds some light on this issue.

My question is : Suppose, i have a central database for few 1000s of real estate property listings. And, I have to display them for 100-200 websites of many real estate agents. Though the domains are all different they have will have substaantial number of pages which have lot of similar content (property listings and details) .

Now, the question is will Google penalise those websites for duplicate content?
Google says thsi regarding Dupliacte content :

"Duplicate content generally refers to substantive blocks of content within or across domains that either completely match other content or are appreciably similar. Mostly, this is not deceptive in origin. Examples of non-malicious duplicate content could include:

  • Discussion forums that can generate both regular and stripped-down pages targeted at mobile devices
  • Store items shown or linked via multiple distinct URLs
  • Printer-only versions of web pages

"

Are those sites displaying  very informative content but showing duplicate content for a very valid and non malicious reason be penalised? Is google's algorithm clever enough to judge this issue correctly? Will appreciate solid answers with real proofs :)

I'm not sure you can get around the unique content algorithm with common content such as this, but I do not have definitive proof.

AB, It's almost impossible to provide real proofs when nobody, except Google, really knows the recipe of their algorithm, the weight each factor carries within this recipe, and the controls Google exercises when considering duplicate content.

I agree with you that in this example the intention is not to utilize black hat tactics or scam the search system but instead your intention is viral marketing coverage. The big questions is will Google see it that way or not?

Here is a theory or hypothesis or posit I am not sure which that I have contemplated, along with Jim at RE Tomato: "Can a blogger write an article in two languages and be credited with two separate articles thus doubling their SEO fresh content?"

In Calif this would benefit any Realtor as Spanish is such a widely spoken language. Your thoughts?

Dean,

When i meant proofs , i meant if somebody is actually running multiple sites from one database. And all other factors like SEO etc. are also same.

I think it will be very difficult to get those kind of answers. :(

As regarding to your comment about same blog content in different languages. I think that an old article, republished in different language (let's say Spanish) should be considered fresh because isn't it a new article for somebody who speaks & read only spanish? I believe it to be perfectly legitimate.

Quite frankly I never thought that this kind of question of same content in different languages should ever pose any problem.  I will check out what "experts" say in this regard.

AB,

I thought the same about languages. My idea was to produce a page on my blog in Spanish. By translating my English content each day I hoped to double my content to two articles per day without having to write a second article.

Sadly the translation software is poor to this point. Thanks for your help!

Ani - One of our title companies offer us a website, that is English or Spanish, click on either.  Would the SEO that they offer work in both languages?  Stupid question?

Virginia: What kind of SEO are they offering? SEO can refer to both on site (title, meta tags, link structure etc.) and off site (link building, blogs, article directories, Press release, Videos).

I think you mean On site Optimization. I think adding title with keywords, proper use of H1, links, anchor text, alt attribute etc. should be done on both versions/langauges . Most of these sites run on some sort of CMS so it depends on it's features and flexibility .

Good question... I would like to hear some other opinions on it.  In our market (Maui) many agents subscribe to our association's "websearch" for property IDX.  There are hundreds of agents with this same content, though formated slightly individually.  It doesn't seem to be hurting, or at least we are all on the same playing field.  Surely the Google gods have considered such an occurance.

Georgina: You must be right. Maybe Google algo is able resolve such things. Or maybe Google is lenient on duplicate issue

AB, I have interesting insight or lack there of from my networking meeting last night. I attended a Web 2.0 meeting of the Silicon Valley Assoc. of Start Up Entrepreneurs in Palo Alto, CA. I was able to have a moment with Google's Evangelist for Open Social Patrick Chanezon, API Evangelist. I posed our question re: content utilizing two languages. Patrick did not know the answer. He refered me to Matt Kurtz. Hopefully I will get an answer straight from the source to share here.

Dean: To get an answer from Matt Kutz will be great!
I have a request. Would it be possible for you to write a post on your meeting. I know it's asking bit too much but it will really help unprivileged lot among us :)

AB- I promise I will attempt to get an answer from Matt. I will be writing an overview of the meeting. I may try to break it up into 2-3 posts as the information was rich to the point where my blog posts might be too long. You totally get it how if you run on too long people tend to "buzz out" and not read the entire article. I promise I will do my best. I wish you could have been there last night you would have loved it!

Ani - RE: Fidelity Title Co's website that they offer to agents - probably on site.  I don't have one, and anyway, what good would it do to have a website in another language that I cannot speak?

I am just curious.

IMO If the listing are MLS it would show on a endless number of websites. My guess - no duplicate content penalty and in most cases the strongest domains would rank the best.
