Tax Tip: Are you providing support for a child in college?

Reblogger Roy Kelley

Be sure to make sure that if your child files their own tax return, they are appropriately marking that they can be claimed as a dependent by someone else. If they do not mark their returns this way and the parent proceeds to file their tax return, it will be rejected by the IRS.

Do you have children that work while attending college?

If you have children working while attending college and you provide more than half of their support, you may be able to claim them on your tax return provided certain conditions are met. During tax season, college students often rush to file their tax returns to obtain and refund of the tax paid, and in their haste, they may miss an important step that could delay the filing of a parents tax return.

Tax Tip: Be sure to make sure that if your child files their own tax return, they are appropriately marking that they can be claimed as a dependent by someone else. If they do not mark their returns this way and the parent proceeds to file their tax return, it will be rejected by the IRS. The childs tax return will then need to be amended and refiled with the IRS via a paper tax filing. The IRS typically takes anywhere from 4 to 16 weeks to process an amended tax return. After the IRS has accepted the childs amended tax return, the parent can then proceed with filing.
