1917 – The enactment of the Jones-Shafroth Act grants Puerto Ricans United States citizenship.
1962 – Wilt Chamberlain sets the single-game scoring record in the National Basketball Association by scoring 100 points. "Wilt the Stilt" Chamberlain first started with University of Kansas, and then the world-famous Harlem Globetrotters before joining the NBA. He played for the Philadelphia/San Francisco Warriors, the Philadelphia 76ers, and the Los Angeles Lakers while in the NBA.
He remains the only player to score 100 points in a single NBA game or average more than 40 and 50 points in a season.
1998 – Data sent from the Galileo spacecraft indicates that Jupiter's moon Europa has a liquid ocean under a thick crust of ice.
