Stop the Stripping!

There is something very disturbing to meClick to viewhappening in the beautiful Texas Hill Country.

Land owners in many areas are busy stripping the blue green hills of the Ashe Juniper trees.  These trees give the beautiful hills their color.  Look in any direction and you will see a brown hill mixed in now or the side of a hill brown and the only green on the very top.  It is sickening to me.  The area I love with all my heart is being ruined by landowners who think they are doing good.

The reasons they strip the hills are many.  One they say is for water conservation.  Let me debunk that myth.  The cedar trees have shallow root systems and do not take the deep ground water away.  They actually preserve water with the shade they create.  Water evaporates from ground that has no shade.

The cedars grow in areas   cedars  that nothing else can grow with very little soil.  They actually prevent erosion which the Hill Country is famous for.  This mindless stripping will cause more erosion than we've seen in decades maybe centuries.

I've heard ranchers say that want to grow more grass for their cattle.  What kind of cattle climb steep hills?  How will you grow grass on rocks that have no dirt because of erosion?

Another reason is the allergies created by the pollen.  Allergies can be minimized or eliminated by rubbing the cedar oil on your skin for a few days.  The Indians ate the blue green berries when they were ripe or used them in teas and this prevented allergies.  Many people do this today.  Get more information before doing this or call me.  The pollen is created only be the male trees.  Cutting the female trees does nothing but destroys a living thing, a beautiful tree.

The habitat and food source for many animals is the Ashe Juniper tree.      The lovely Hill Country is known for its many deer and exotic animals.  They live under these trees.  Take away the trees and you take away the deer and the other animals.

Bird watching  hummingbird   is huge in the Hill Country.  How many birds are attracted to these trees and live in these trees?  Stripping the hills of cedar will change the birding in this area.  This affects tourism greatly.

Many people rely on tourism for their living.  All kinds of resorts, B&B's, hunting lodges, photography, restaurants, and the list goes on.  Removing cedar from the hills will be devastating for the economy of this area.  Not to mention the decreased beauty and death of wildlife.

Many people will disagree with me on this because they do not have their facts straight.  The Ashe Juniper has been here since the Ice Age and that is a proven fact.  Many say differently.  It is a beneficial tree that produces lumber for fencing and furniture as well as the other important aspects I have already pointed out.

Please educate yourself on the benefits of the cedar trees and educate your neighbor and help stop this waste of our natural resources and the destruction of the beautiful Texas Hill Country.

You would be surprised were cattle can end up. My family keeps cattle in a maountain range in Mexico, and I have found them quite high up at times. That being said, I would prefer the stripping to stop as well. My parents live around Canyon Lake for many years now. I am always shocked by the changes every time I go up to visit them, and most of it is so people can have large lawns to look at, but not use.

Frank,    You are so right.  We waste a lot of water and money keeping up large lawns that are not necessary or beneficial.  Our society needs to get back to basics and conserve the resources we have.  Maybe the high gas prices will help in many other areas when it comes to conservation.  Thanks for commenting.  The Canyon Lake area is so beautiful and the cedar keeps it that way.

We do have lots of cedar and very thick in some areas of Canyon Lake. I see new developments coming in stripping the cedar but do leave the oak trees thank goodness they don't cut down the oak trees. Our native deer lke to lay up under the cedar during the heat of the day, but are running out of places to go. If these people like city living so much maybe they need to move back to the city. Leave the beautiful hill country alone.

Carl,  You are right too.  People move to the country because it is beautiful and then want to change it to look like the city.  What I'm really talking about though is the hills in the distance that do not have development but land owners are stripping these hills of all vegetation to get rid of cedar.

Look at the hills in Johnson City when you are coming south on Hwy 281 before you get into town.  I used to love to look at those hills because I knew I was close to home but today some of those hills are completely brown dirt.  The beautiful blue green hills are gone and never will return in my lifetime or probably in my children's.  Cedar does not grow that fast.  Even the "Old Growth" or "Bull" cedars are being cut down and some of these are hundreds of years old.  What a shame!

Howdy Ricki

my good friend,

I am sorry to read and hear folk's in your beautiful Hill Country are rapeing Mother Earth of her beautiful Ashe Juniper Trees.

Not one of those reasons is sound for folk's to be destroing the land of Mother Earth and her children. The erosion can end up be just like they had done stripmining for silver and gold back in the silver and gold mining days of the 1800.

My friend please do your best to help educate them, that they are doing wrong.

Frank is right about cattel will go up high in mountain range's. I have work on cattel ranch's in Colorado, Wyoming and the Dakota's.

I also know when it comes to Cattelmen it's a tall order to get them to see another way of thinken.

If there is any way that I can help you, just let me know.

God Bless The U.S.A.

Thank you so much Dale,     Just sharing the knowledge with other folks to get them to see how wrong it is what they are doing.  The Hill Country was stripped like this many years ago and that is what caused so much of the erosion.  The Texas Valley is very fertile because all of our topsoil is down there.  What little we have left will be there soon if this stripping continues.  It is just awful!  In every direction you go, you will see some of it.  Big machines and big money is causing it.  It must stop soon or it will be devastating to this area.  Thank  you for commenting!

Ricki, that is so sad.  We have the problem here of them clear cutting so they can build houses.  Rarely will they keep the trees and build around them as they can cram so many more houses in land that has been clear cut.  It is so sad to see these huge oak and pine trees going down.

It's me again, I just don't know what is going on. This is the 9th time this week that when I uploaded a comment it showed that I was not logedin, when I had logedin to the community.

That is my comment up above, even though I know you can see that it is.

Marchel,      This is a mindset the public has let happen.  A throw away society where nothing is valued anymore like before.  They could build around the trees and it would cost more but how much more?  They have to replant when the house is finished.  How do the costs compare?  No one knows because someone said this is the way to do it and nobody rebuffs it.  It is time to change some things.

Dale,     I've had lots of that this week too.  It knocks me off and I have to log in time and time again.  I even lost a blog because of it.  It's frustrating but worth it! :)

Thank you for such a wonderfully informative blog post.  There seems to be so many misconceptions about our native plants and it is powerful to have the truth.

Hi Trey,  I kinda think everything is there for a reason.  The Creator's plan is the best.  Why should we always be trying to change everything.  That always gets us in trouble like when we introduce an insect or animal into a different environment to eradicate a pest and end up causing all kinds of havoc.  Many times we cannot change it back.  When will we learn to leave nature alone?

It's such a great area.  They don't realize what they are doing to it. Hopefully, they will stop before it is too late.
