Recently was on a conference call with Floyd Wickman's team and many of the past recipients of the Get By Giving Award.
Afterward, I was reminiscing.
In 1998 I'd been lucky enough to have taken Sweat Hogs, met Gary Sisson, Mike, Mary, and of course, Floyd Wickman!
Lee and I had invited Mike Pallin to dinner the evening before the Master Sales Academy in Atlantic City. Mike was a bit on edge, which I attributed to the stress of the MSA. I felt guilty taking him away from his responsibilities, knowing he had a huge day ahead. It wasn't until later that I found out why he was on edge.
The next day was the presentation of The Carolyn Howd Award. Today it is known as the Get By Giving Award.
From the front of the audience, I watched, with great admiration, the previous winners already on stage.
This presentation was most coveted and I was in awe of Jennie Cook one of the previous winners already on stage.
And then, they started talking about the new recipient, and the more they described, the more familiar things sounded.
Oh my, they were talking and describing me. When announcing my name, I have no idea how I got on stage. Maybe it was Nelson Zide or Bob Daniels who held me up, or perhaps I just floated up. When I took the microphone on stage, I asked if My Lee was aware. Assured he was, I blurted out "Where the hell is he?"
No way something so significant could happen without him in the room.
Luckily, someone was able to find him and bring him into the ceremony.
To this day, this plaque above is in my office, and it is still my highest honor.
To be recognized not for production, not for the most listings, not for the top producer.
But for the Get By Giving award and what it stands for.
