Goodbye Carlsbad Village Art & Antique Mall

You Will be Missed!

It seems like just a few weeks ago that I learned about the future demise of the Carlsbad Village Art and Antique Mall. In reality it was last fall when I first heard about this.

Carlsbad Art and Antique Mall

This quirky, fun-looking set of buildings has housed multiple vendors, and been a staple of the Village, for about 30 years.

The Carlsbad Village Art and Antique Mall is being torn down, or perhaps more correctly - re-used and renovated - to be replaced by State Street Commons, an upscale multi-purpose facility reportedly with 21,000 SF of restaurant and retail space, at 2742-52 State Street in the heart of the hip and artsy North State Area.

I had to meet with a tenant at my new listing hitting the market in this area on Tuesday, and drove down State Street on Friday. It's been a few weeks since I was in the area and I was pretty surprised at all the changes taking place and what's left of the Carlsbad Village Art and Antique Mall.

I'm trying to be optimistic that this is a good thing for the Village, but it's sad to think about the store owners and tenants who have been displaced after so many years. The Mas Fina Cantina is still there but, I understand, that is going to be gone as well.

The look and feel of this particular part of town will certainly be different. Stay tuned for progress reports!

Hi Jeff- I feel for you. I'm sure that what will come will be good for the community but at the same time, we mourn the loss of what we've become familiar with. I saw it happen in Delray Beach.

Jeff even if what replaces the Carlsbad Village Art and Antique Mall is positive, it is still had to see the end of something that has been embedded in the community for generations.

Hi Jeff,

We recently said good-bye to a longstanding business (nearly 100 yrs old) in our community, Blind George's Newsstand.  They sold the best popcorn this side of the Pacific Northwest.  Imagine our delight when we discovered that another local business bought Blind George's popcorn machine.

Perhaps your community will save a remnant of what was for what will be.

Hi Kathy Streib

Thank you. Yes, it happens everywhere and there is often the feeling of loss when these changes take place. Hopefully there will be positives, too, as a result!

Thanks George Souto . I know this is progress, and hopefully the City of Carlsbad has made a good decision. While I will miss this wonderful part of the Carlsbad Village culture I am hopeful the new facility will be a wonderfull addition to the community.

I truly hope so Melinda (Mel) Peterson . The website for the developer talks about preserving some of the look and feel of what was. We can hope.

That's a pretty neat story you shared! What a wonderful  next step in your community!

Good morning Jeff. Time will tell if the change was worth it. I like quaint old shops with that sense of family feel. Enjoy your day!

Good morning, Jeff... I've never been to the Carlsbad Village Art and Antique Mall... but reading your post made me very sad about its demise. I hate seeing "institutions" like this go away in any community.

Will those business owners be able to re-open their shops after the renovation or did they get bought out?

Hello Jeff - saying "goodbye" to the familiar can tug at our heartstrings despite how much we aware of the importance and the likelihood of change.

I am not resistant to change, but I am often sad when tradition falls to modernization. I hope these people land on their feet.

Many of our communities are seeing redevelopment projects. The major mall in Gaithersburg is not targeted for redevelopment.

I hope so, too James Dray  Time will tell.

I enjoy those types of shops, too Wayne Martin  and they fit in well with the vibe of Carlsbad IMO.
