Inspired by a fellow blogger Troy Murphy's blog post "Go Google Yourself", I decided to indeed go and Google myself and was quite shocked at the results.
Lets take a look at what I found on my adventures in Googleland.
When I Googled my own name I was not at all surprised to see that my Active Rain and LinkedIn profiles ranked highly. What did surprise me was that a review that I had made of a CD back in 2001 (YES, I said it 2001) is also ranked quite highly.
Not sure what kind of information is indexed? Take a look at the ones I can personally raise my hand to:
- Social Networks (Facebook, Linked In, etc)
- Any blog that you have contributed to (be it your own blog or someone else's)
- Forums and Message Boards
- Photo/Video Hosting Servers (You Tube, Flickr, etc)
- Amazon
One of the most interesting things about this entire phenomena, is that there is no sure fire way of finding out who I actually Googling you. Everyone from potential clients to coworkers has the ability to be their own super sleuth. A recent survey by Dogpile states that 23% of coworkers admitted to Googling their colleagues.
The moral of this story? When you put your information out there is stays out there. For those of us who were not so SEO savvy a few years back, that may come as a bit of a shock. And it is amazing how much of that information is picked up on by the major search engines.
Happy Googling!
