Adventures In Googleland

By
Services for Real Estate Pros

Inspired by a fellow blogger Troy Murphy's blog post "Go Google Yourself", I decided to indeed go and Google myself and was quite shocked at the results.

Lets take a look at what I found on my adventures in Googleland.

Majenic Virtual Solutions

When I Googled my own name I was not at all surprised to see that my Active Rain and LinkedIn profiles ranked highly. What did surprise me was that a review that I had made of a CD back in 2001 (YES, I said it 2001) is also ranked quite highly.

Not sure what kind of information is indexed? Take a look at the ones I can personally raise my hand to:

  • Social Networks (Facebook, Linked In, etc)
  • Any blog that you have contributed to (be it your own blog or someone else's)
  • Forums and Message Boards
  • Twitter
  • Photo/Video Hosting Servers (You Tube, Flickr, etc)
  • Amazon

One of the most interesting things about this entire phenomena, is that there is no sure fire way of finding out who I actually Googling you. Everyone from potential clients to coworkers has the ability to be their own super sleuth. A recent survey by Dogpile states that 23% of coworkers admitted to Googling their colleagues.

The moral of this story? When you put your information out there is stays out there. For those of us who were not so SEO savvy a few years back, that may come as a bit of a shock. And it is amazing how much of that information is picked up on by the major search engines.

Happy Googling!

Doing a Google search on yourself and your market is a wise idea.  I do it no less than once a month.

There is an extremely high chance that  if someone is going to hire you as an agent, they will Google your name.  Hopefully what you want to show up will, if not you better learn a little about SEO.

Lidia,

Good post I will check it out.  I do have another question for you though the Blog Log you have I have not been able to add that to my page.  How did you place it?

Larry - if you go to "My Settings" and then "Description" and you should  be able to customize your sidebar with pretty much anything as long as you have the code for it. If you are still having problems (either locating the correct code, or placing the info on your page) email me an I'll gladly step you through it.

Some interesting information here.... Besides checking my credit score regularly, I Google not only myself but my company. It is very important to be up there in the rankings. This is especially so when competition in my field is growing....

I google myself regularly too.  I started doing it just as amusement, but then I decided I should probably do it on a regular basis since I am on the web for my business.  Thank you for reminding us!  It's also fun just to see how you rank and which ones are you or someone else with your name!

I google myself AND I also googled my name under images.  A picture that my mother put of my daughter popped up, her middle name is my first name.  I am not sure I like that.

Amber - I would advise that you set up "Google Alert' so that you can be informed when your name is bieng used. I have found it very useful.

Regina - Unfortunately we are in an Internet age and we are all pretty much guilty of putting pictures of our kids out on websites, etc. I actually had a website for my sons until recently. I became increasingly concerned as to who was able to access it (people were fwding the link around, etc) and ended up taking it down altogether.
