I don't know about you, but I use craigslist a lot.  I don't just use it for real estate, I use it to buy and sell stuff.  Now craigslist makes sense in almost every category, but real estate some what puzzles me.  I post my listings on craigslist on a regular, twice a week routine and this drives 10 times more traffice to my site than google and I rank on the first page of google for many key words.  This is great traffic as it is a local and consist of pretty much all potential buyers  looking at my listings.

But Why?

Why do some many people use craigslist to look for homes for sale?  It is just a major mix of stuff with no way to refine the search to see what you want.  I live in an area that I would consider medium size and there is 3 pages on average of new post daily, I can only imagine how many new post a place like New York would have. Who can and has time to post daily to stay in the public eye? and if you do its just considered spamming.  And these potential buyers, why would they waste so much time searching a site that is truely a mess and only contains just a few of the homes available to them? There are so many great sites out there with advanced search tools to find just what your looking for and contains all the market listings and data. So, the question is why to they use it? but as long as they do I will continue to use this free advertising tool.

Do they not know about these sites? Realtor.com, Trulia.com

I use Craigslist a lot, it's a great venue to drive traffic to my website and the more traffic the more potential buyers and sellers.  I think the perception is that the buyer is getting a deal on craigslist.  It was designed for professionals like us, it was designed for the FSBO market.  But it works, who cares why!!

I normally don't get too much attention on my listing from craigslist.  Maybe because the Chicago sites are very overloaded.  However, when I have used it to sell items other than real estate, I have received many calls.  I like backpage.com better.  I get more hits on my listings, just me $.02.

I really didn't think that Craigslist worked for real estate either.  By my past couple of clients found the houses they wanted on Craigslist.  Saved me some work and now I think it maybe working taking a look.

I advertise on Craiglist quite a bit, and I've noticed that within an hour of posting an ad that if I type in the keywords for that ad in Google, it shows up often times in the number 1 slot. And, the webpage that the ad directs you to shows up in the number 2 slot. While the ad itself on Craiglist might not generate a lot of responses, in might help increase your presence online in the major search engines and thereby increase your overall exposure. And the nice thing about advertising on Craigslist is it's FREE!

Thanks for the post.  I have had very few leads from craigslist so I'm thinking of changing my strategy...  Any hints?

Craigslist was working great to sell real estate in Miami Beach, we actually sold several condos that way. Now craigslist is full of spammers, or to many fake postings from realtors that are fishing for clients, I hope they start charging a little fee so we will only post seriuos and real listings. It works in NYC... Regards ;)
