Also, Harris Teeter will designate ExpressLane Online Shopping pick-up times from 9:00 am till 2:00 pm for seniors only every Thursday until further notice AND will waive the $4.95 fee & offer $5 delivery for seniors during these times. Senior ExpressLane pickup and delivery times can be reserved beginning Monday, March 23 at 10:00 am. Promotional codes can be found at www.harristeeter.com/order-online/groceries on Monday, March 23 at 10am. Current ExpressLane customers will receive the codes via email.

  • Fresh Market: Seniors may shop from 8:00 am till 9:00 pm on weekdays.

  • Target: Seniors aged 65 and older can shop the first hour every Wednesday. You may need to check the store hours for your local Target.

  • Big Lots: will reserve the first hour of each day for shopping by seniors. (Check with your local Big Lots regarding operating hours and age restrictions.)

  • Dollar General: is encouraging all its stores to devote the first hour of each shopping day for seniors, but you should confirm with your local Dollar General.

  • Bi-Lo: is reserving 8:00 am till 9:00 am Mondays through Fridays for Seniors. (Check with your local store on age restriction.)

  • Reid's Fine Foods: no senior shopping hours, but Reid's is offering offering free delivery to all customers age 60 and older within 5 miles of one of its four Charlotte locations.

Limits On Purchases Of High Demand Items

Meantime, keep in mind that most retailers are now limiting purchases of high demand items such as liquid soaps, hand sanitizers, rubbing alcohol, peroxide, certain water bottle packs, bath tissue, paper towels, household cleaners, bleach and dish detergent.

Many Charlotte Shopping Malls & Stores Closed

Three of Charlotte area's largest shopping malls -- South Park, Concord Mills, Premium Outlets -- are totally closed. Meantime, Carolina Place Mall and Northlake Mall have reduced their hours, but some retailers in these malls are not open at all. Before you shop, check if a store you're planning to go to is open.

I took my Dad to Safeway and Albertson's for the special senior shopping hours and there were people of all ages in there.  It was not crowded, so it wasn't that big of a deal.

Brian England hi Brian... you'd think the stores who offer these special hours would monitor that... then again, people of other ages may be those with chronic illnesses who are also covered under the senior hours.

Hello again Nina. You scored. Congratulations!!!!!! Fortunately I always have toilet paper in the house so I will survive until it is prevalent again. TY I went to a specialty store this morning too and there were at least 50 seniors in line before they opened 25 minutes later. It was snowing.

Sheila Anderson nothing like adding snow to the mix, don't you thinkg, Sheila? I'm always being kidded that I have a big supply of all paper products stored in my garage... that's because I buy when they are on deep discount... afterall, they don't spoil. No one is laughing at me now. Meantime, I continue to add to the stash as I find it (just in case).

Nina, I went this morning, for me and one of my at risk neighbors.  The line was REALLY long at 7 am, and no buggies at 6:50 when I got there.   Had to go to Walmart to get spaghetti sauce, strawberries and catfood, as Kings still had empty shelves.  Probably won't do that again.

Hello Nina,  I know that this is good for older people but still not sure how good this is for all that go that early that could have it.

Joan Cox hi Joan... our senior hours just began in some places yesterday and some don't start till this week, so I haven't had a chance to test it out. I might just test out Harris Teeter on Thursday morning since that is when I typically shop there anyway.

Nina,

I am happy to hear that you have senior hours at these stores.  I am seeing the urgency calming down here.  Now, if the mass media would report good news instead of battering people with fear and and anxiety...

Hello again Nina. I too have a good supply. Why not, you're right it doesn't go bad. I bought a few small packs of toilet paper last week: just in case too. Have a good day my friend.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel hi Alexandra... I'm not out enough to get a good sense of whether things are calming down or not. But the stores seem reasonably calm. Just saw something that said my zip code had the most corona virus incidents (six of them) in Charlotte. I agree that the media reporting has been overly one-sided on the whole... of course, it's important to get people to pay attention... but people also need some good news to calm their fears. Not sure that the 24/7 reporting is helping.

Sheila Anderson hi again to you, Sheila... I keep telling myself that this too will pass and keeping as positive as possible. The alternative is not pleasant.

Hi Nina,
I'm pleased to see the grocery stores doing this.  I hope it does help the seniors feel less anxiety with the whole experience. Our Albertsons and Safeway stores have a 2-hour block on Tuesday and Thursday for seniors.

Joe Pryor hi Joe... there's has to be some advantage to being a senior... I've been taking advantage of everything I can since my mid-50's (which I wish I could remember). I'll check out my Harris Teeter early on Thursday morning... my normal shopping day in any event as it's also the day seniors get a 5% discount.
