Restaurants are still offering takeout and delivery food even as the coronavirus crisis has forced them to close dine-in options. Restaurants also have been deemed essential businesses and will be allowed to remain open in most states.

But one question nags some consumers. Does ordering takeout food from a restaurant create a risk of coronavirus transmission? The answer from the experts: Not really.

Neither food nor food packaging has been linked to the transmission of coronavirus, according to an informational guide provided by North Carolina State University.. The guide, based on data from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the Food and Drug Administration and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, presents helpful tips on ordering takeout during the coronavirus crisis.

Takeout and drive-thru foods pose little to no risk, but safe practices should be used, like hand washing after handling food packaging, the guide states. Additionally, no-contact delivery options and low-contact curbside pickup options can reduce the risk associated with in-person interaction, the university stated.
