Flying high in Big Sky Country

BELGRADE - When Gallatin Field General Manager Ted Mathis began working at the airport in 1981, there were 29 hangars for private planes.

ERIK PETERSEN/Chronicle Jets line the tarmac as Yellowstone Jet Center workers tend to them over President's Day weekend, an especially busy time for the Jet Center.
Today, there are 165, including the 17 new ones built last year.

When it comes to expensive toys, private planes are right up there. A modest model costs about the same as a new diesel pickup, around $50,000, and renting one of those new hangar spaces can cost hundreds of dollars a month. And then there’s the insurance and fuel.

Clearly, a lot of people in the Gallatin Valley have a lot of disposable income.

Most of the local planes run on propellers, but 27 private jets are registered here, too, Mathis said. And they comprise only a fraction of the private jet traffic.

Wow Chuck, that must have been long ago. Flying D is owned by Turner Enterprises Incorporated... I'm not sure who owned it before. West Dickerson is where the Law & Justice center is, directly in front of that are some office buildings and even more west is more offices/condos and an Albertson's grocery store. East Dickerson is closer to Downtown Bozeman and that is mostly residential properties. Vanns IGA is located on North 7th Street, down by Walmart and Kmart.

You should come back to Bozeman sometime and see how it's grown, you'll be amazed!!!

The Flying "D" was previously owned by a California corporation that bought it From Carl Ross, but Carl still ran it thru the 70s....Yup...I am pretty old...hehehe

I went to Bozeman rosary, they closed the school in 1976 after I graduated...last class to graduate there, and MSU bought it and ran the Police Academy out of there for a few years. A

And Vanns IGA is still standing...that was my first real job...bagging groceries...for about 2 weeks before I went to work on the Flying "D".
