Monolithic or post tension slab- whats the difference?
By definition, a monolithic slab is not a post tension slab. I do reference "monolithic" slab in this episode, but do so as its one big piece of concrete. But understand, a true slab, is just one giant piece of concrete poured into a frame, settles and cures.
For this series on building, it was just easier for me to call it what I did, ha ha. Now, understand, this is what we see, after the concrete is poured over the cables (see post tension slab episode link below).
Once this concrete cures, then the framing begins (upcoming episode). So what is a monolithic slab? Well, its a foundation system, constructed as one single concrete pour that consists of a concrete slab with thickened portions of the slab under the load bearing walls and all perimeter edges that take the place of footers.
is this different from a post tension slab? Yes it is, but both serve the same purpose when building a home. Is this a better option? Depends, it is more cost effective as its less materials and less labor involved.
Either method is sufficient when building a home, but if you are overly concerned about cracking and settling, best to find a builder using the post tension method, but understand, your house is still going to crack and settle, as its part of the process.
