Rickman John Godlee
James Dray provides us with the history of another man that did a lot to advance surgical procedures and I am always amazed by the things surgeons are now able to do.
Rickman John Godlee was born in Upton, Essex, England back in 1849, to Rickman and Mary. After graduation at Tottenham, he continued his education at the University College, London graduating with a B.A. After that, he received him medical degree from the University of London, winning a gold medal at both is Bachelor and Master of Surgery examinations.
He was appointed assistant surgeon at Charing Cross Hospital, later he was appointed to surgeon at Brompton Hospital, London. In 1885, he moved to University College Hospital as Emeritus Professor of Clinical Surgery. He also served as President of the Royal College of Surgeons from 1911-1913 and of the Royal Society of Medicine from 1916-1918. He died in 1925, he was 76.
What you may not know about Sir Rickman John Godlee, 1st Baronet is that on November 25, 1884 is that he was the first surgeon to perform brain surgery by removing a brain tumor from a patient.
