Last evening, an official with Empire State Development Corp. in a clarification of the designation of real estate as an essential industry, stated that all showings must be conducted virtually or online in order to prevent the spread of the Novel Coronavirus.

Matthew Gordon, executive vice president, public affairs and communications for ESD, stated, “Being an 'essential' industry does not mean business as usual—business can only be conducted if social distancing and other public health protocols are followed and all must be doing everything they can to help stop the spread. For real estate, that means brokers can only transact business in their offices or show properties virtually, and anything else is off limits.”

He added that appraisers/inspectors are able to visit properties for inspection. Brokers can oversee transactions/signings at their offices while following social distancing protocols.

Hi Phyllis,

I am not sure why they would deem Real Estate Agents an essential service at this time, when they are telling us to limit our time out of our homes. I can't imagine with what is going on in New York state they would want anyone out of their homes unless absolutely necessary.

We are deemed essential service here to in Canada.

Hi Phyllis Lerner call 914.438.7556, thanks for this update from New York. These state orders are changing daily, and most seem to be trending toward making real estate services essential.

despite the fact that we are now considered an essential service in NY we are not allowed to show properties in person... hold open houses... or meet people in person... but we are allowed to work virtually and online... and out of our offices if we implement strict social distancing guidelines...
