A New Game- Realtor® Myth Busting

By
Real Estate Agent with Integrity Real Estate Group

MonopolyChances are most children don't pretend to be Realtors® when they are little unless their families were in the business.  As kids we thought about being fireman, policemen or teachers.  A few of you might have had more lofty ambitions and considered a run for the presidency or flying the space shuttle but the closest most of us got to a real estate career was a game of Monopoly.

Recently I was asked to speak to a group of high school students about careers (I've had a few) and how I ended up as a Realtor®.  The crazy character side of me thought about taking the Rodney Dangerfield approach, let's face it sometimes we don't get a lot of respect, but the professional side won out and I think it was an eye opener for many of the students.

I created a new game called "Realtor® Myth Busters" for the kids to play. The first myth I busted was that Realtors® can set their own schedules.  Anyone else want to bust that one too?   The second myth was that Realtors® were "bored" housewives.  Anyone want to tackle that one?  And the third myth was that a "million dollar" producer actually makes a million dollars.  There were many more but I'm sure you can make a list of myths that you would like to bust as well.

What was sad was that there wasn't a single student who thought of a Realtor® as a business owner when I started.  By the time I was done with myth busters and the components of building a business there was at least a glimmer of recognition that the word Realtor® does have meaning and that there is more to real estate that wandering around looking at houses.  Speaking with the kids was a great opportunity to spend some time with the "younger" generation and maybe even get one to think about real estate as a future career.

Cindy I have heard someone say before that how many of us thought when I grow up I want to be a Realtor? Not many of us I think.

Hi Cindy,

What a great job, good stuff!

It's funny what some think we do vs. what really happens, like "doing lunch" when it's normally a behind-the-wheal-meal at the drive-thu. Or like when I'm bending over in the bushes standing the the flowerbed hunting for the hidden lock box I always say "yep this is the glamorous part of the job", ...they just laugh.

Cindy, I started out wanting to be a nun.  the Realtor thing didn't occur to me until later in life!  And it's much more fun - you don't have to take a vow of poverty!

CINDY - Until REALTORS start thinking of ourselves as business owners, I would be surprised to see the public thinking of us this way.  The fact of the matter is that I've seen new people, people that have been hanging around for a while, and top producers all have the employee mindset.  Maybe you can go to the NAR convention and play this game with REALTORS.  Just a thought....

Jean-these "kids" were really surprised as we went through the typical day of an agent.  HGTV may not be doing us any favors by only showing agents touring houses.

Bart-I was going to be a teacher.  Which I was for many years.  Realtor came in "retirement" and it has taken all of my past business skills to help make me successful.

Lynda-yes most people do miss all of the glamour that goes with our jobs.  Naked people and talking parrots aside our jobs often require long hours and a lot of skills that folks don't consider.

Pam-it was fun and teenages aren't interested in a lecture.  If I could have figured out how to make it a video game I'm sure it would have been even better.

Adam-you are right.  I'm still surprised when I talk to agents who are part of the "herd" mentality.  I just sigh and work harder to make myself standout among the crowd.

That was pretty cool....it's no wonder why the public 'assumes' that we are this or that. All my clients think I'm rich...lol!

I love it!  My kids in no way want to be Realtors.  They surely don't get the impression that it is an easy job.  My son helps me with BPOs and we call exterior photos of defaulted loans "drive by shootings"

Cindy.... I have found that many folks don't have real Respect for our profession. And maybe rightly so... Only after using a REAL proffessional can they see what a difference it can be.

I do remember my first experience with a REAL Realtor. This lady just inspired me to clean up my act, and I was selling my own property, and I was blown away with how she represented her client to me. Later, even as a Realtor, I used her on a refferral basis because she was so great to deal with. Then there are some of the others, who don't seem to have a clue..

My feelings is that we have an obligation to show the world what dealing with a true proffessional is like. And if we are not there yet, then to find one to work with and learn. Accepting incompetence in our proffession is why we have so many who are.......well lets just say not fully trained to be handling such important legal matter.  Have a great day

Hi Cindy,  Great Post!  I think I'd like to play this game with some clients.  It would be nice to bust the myth that we are all mind readers and do not require communication.
