Lebanon, MO gas station

Missouri recently made the news for having the least expensive gas in the country.

I remember moving here in January of 2000 and paying 98 cents a gallon for FULL SERVICE gas.

I have to admit, while I am loving our status as being the lowest in gas prices, I didn't really know WHY.

Heading to one of my favorite sites, Google, it didn't take me long to figure it all out:

  1. Lower taxes on gas. At 17.6 cents per gallon, that is one of the lowest gas tax rates in the country.
  2. Missouri is close to Texas, the Gulf, and the Conoco refinery in Illinois.
  3. Missouri has a state law requiring all gasoline to include 10 percent ethanol. This reduces the per gallon price of gas - or so say the experts.
  4. Many of the gas stations in Missouri are part of a "big box" set up, such as at Wal-Mart. Most of our gas stations are also convenient stores or have fast food restaurants associated with the station. The theory - price on gas can stay lower as the consumer will spend more money on food, drink and snacks while getting gas.

Debbie, that must be nice to have the lowest gas prices.....According to my mom...it had been raining so much that a lot of people where choosing to stay home, thus saving even more. :)  I'm really wishing we would have a nice rain here.

Rain is turning into a dirty word here in Missouri, Sondra. While I love how green and bright it's made everything, I am getting rather tired of the rain. We can almost watch the grass grow! Your Mom is right: Many people are tired of looking like a drowned rat, so they're just staying put!

Debbie - Did you ever think you would hear anyone say that $3.66 a gallon gas looked like a good deal?  Me either.  You're about 50 cents under us which is crazy considering we refine it not 9 miles south of town.

Good morning Debbie, I heard that on the radio the other day. I guess that coupled with low state taxes, the closeness to the refineries help. I still say we need to develop alternative fuel sources.

Hi Debbie,

Lucky you - we are at $3.99 at one station, $4.01 at others.

Debbie, Whoever thought we would consider ourselves lucky at $3.66 per gallon?  Here I last paid $4.33 several days ago...and I have no doubt it will reach $5 soon.

Jesse and Carole - You are so right, I never thought I'd be celebrating $3.66 a gallon for gas!

Michael - I am always amazed - we can send men and women to the moon and a space station yet we can't find an alternative to gasoline.

Irene - Do you think gas will really hit $5 a gallon? Seems like it could.

Great piece.  The numbers simply look sureal plastered on the signs.  Here in AZ we appear to be paying around the nations average.  I have to agree that prices may move above $5.  They may settle back but I dont think we will ever see the 3$ mark again.   Driving open houses is getting expensive.

by the way, Do you have an outside blog that I can add to my Blogroll ?

Thanks and look forward to reading your thoughts on the world of real estate.

James - Thanks for stopping by. I do not have an outside blog. Well, lets put it this way, I bought a TypePad blog but I do not use it. I keep telling myself I need to start, but AR and Point 2 keeps me pretty busy!

Can't afford to be a tour guide with gas prices soaring higher and higher.

Debbie, It really is a blessing to have such low taxes here in the Ozarks. I hope that trend continues
