How Real Estate Agents Should Handle COVID-19
Though the COVID-19 (or Coronavirus) needs no introduction, each and every one of us
has been faced with trying to understand both the current and long-term impacts it will have
on our personal and professional lives. For me, I wanted to know how real estate agents
should be thinking about COVID-19 and its impact to how we do business.
I recently had the opportunity to interview Dr. Sidney Coupet, DO, an internal medicine
specialist from Pompano Beach, and it was a wake-up call for me on understanding how
serious this pandemic is. It’s hard to sort out all the information that is coming out on
COVID-19, so it was refreshing for me to be able to talk to a medical professional.
A few key things you’ll hear in the interview:
The seriousness of the illness and the importance of social distancing. Dr. Coupet says “This is a very serious illness that we haven’t seen (before) in this generation.”
Whether it is safe for real estate agents to continue to show properties.
The risks of showing properties during this time of social distancing (and how long the virus can live on doorknobs and other surfaces).
The effectiveness of handwashing and hand sanitization if you have to go out (and which hand sanitizers work best).
A broad takeaway for real estate agents is that, even though our work remains essential and
valuable during this time, Dr. Coupet says we need to take these measures seriously. To
protect both ourselves and our customers, we need to be creative and do things digitally
while focusing on personal protections like handwashing, sanitizers, and masks. These help
to not only protect ourselves and our customers, but by playing our part it also means as a
community and nation we can get through this pandemic quicker.
A special thanks to Bob Crane for taking time to share his expertise on Zoom to ensure that the interview would be a success.
