Wake Up And Smell The Coffee

A bit of a different path, found me walking in another direction than I typically take and I passed a condominium building where the unique scent of coffee was quite strong.  Definitely Distinctive.  Presumably(in my mind)it was freshly brewed.  Although I am not a regular coffee drinker, I do appreciate the aroma.

It wasn't just that wisp of a whiff but other things seemed present as well.  Details suddenly became more obvious.  Small and not-so-small.  I noticed and saw more.  Things I had observed in the past suddenly took on a new significance.

Rather than look for  an additional meaning behind waking up and smelling the coffee or going off on a search for Mrs. Olsen from those Folger's Coffee commercials from the 1960s and 1970s, I once again turned ro the words of others on the subject of awareness.  It felt right.  Like a morning cup of coffee seems right for some.  Here's what I found:

Change is certain.

Peace is followed by disturbances;

departure of evil men by their return.

Such recurrences should not constitute occasions for sadness

but

realities for awareness,

so that one may be happy in the interim.

Joan Cox - I definitely understand the appeal. It is not "lost" on me.  Of course, I also understand those who start a day with a can of Coke or Pepsi but that is a concept that eludes me.

I love the smell and taste of coffee, even though I am relegated to drinking caffeine free due to an allergy, I enjoy that first morning coffee. I can see how the smell lifts and heightens your senses.

I do like the smell of coffee, but never acquired the taste for it.  Total cups in my life are probably 2?  And one was from a bad case of jet lag in Japan at a business meeting.  Anything with caffeine was welcome.  Bill

Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 - I have wondered about those who can drink coffee at night before bed - it isn't something I have ever "grasped".

Liz and Bill Spear - I have heard similar stories over the years.

Michael Jacobs - Isn't it amazing how a good, hot cup of coffee arouses the senses? If my coffee doesn't taste as good as it smells, I won't drink it. Coffee is not my holy grail; however, when it's good, it really hits the spot. I don't know if it's true or false, but I've been told creative folks are more likely to drink coffee - a lot of coffee throughout the day. One cup is all I can take. And speaking of creative people, I wonder what marti garaughty would say?

Patricia... the 3 blue packages in this photo next to my canvas isn't paint, they're industrial strength espresso. End of story ! ;-)

marti garaughty - obviously, I have a lot to learn about the art of making the perfect cup of coffee. My coffee is a hit or miss - just right or too bitter. Intensity, viscosity, and strength make a difference but boy it sure makes a difference when you're organized and know exactly what you need and how to prepare. Have a nice day!

Ahhhh Michael- we have a wonderful fully automatic coffee maker. When we sent it out for repair, I welcomed it back with open arms and a big hug.

Michael Jacobs - I still remember coffee as the "think it over" drink.  I think that was in the 60's.  Anyway, I miss thinking it over at my Starbucks.

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP - I haven't noticed a beverage pattern for creative people I have encountered over the years.  There is a definite range.  Along with other qualities. Of course, my idea of creative may be much different from the opinion of others.   Now, that could be an interesting pondering opportunity.

Kathy Streib - well, embracing an appliance.  I can't say I have experienced that.  At least not yet.

Grant Schneider - And while I rarely visited Starbucks, I do enjoy walking by the stores that are remaining(some of them) open but am missing the faces of people who gathered in groups each day.  I think they are missing it too.

Love it Michael!  There's nothing better than the sweet aroma of a freshly brewed pot of coffee, paired with the magical sense that all will be okay in our world.

Hi Michael Jacobs - When we first started going to Maui on extended vacations of 2 weeks or more back at the turn of the century, we found the coffee in the image below.  I order the beans 10 at a time and love the smell of fresh ground coffee with a hint of coconut.  Sir Wilfreds Coconut coffee

As to your finer point... as we gain more wisdom, we realized that change is the only constant in life.

Morning Michael.

Yes the sights, sounds and smells of certain things bring back such memories.  I'm good for a cup about every two-three days.  But then again, that's just me

James Dray - life offers many sensory experiences and some happen simultaneously.

For me, coffee is mostly about the aroma.  And that "works" for me.

Well I certainly don't care for the part about evil men returning.

I'm not a coffee drinker, but my favorite ice cream flavor is coffee.

isn't there something about the scent of coffee being used to clear the sense of smell before smelling other things? Perfume testers maybe. just a weird thing stuck in my head.

Sharon Tara - as I have shared previously I was in department store retailing prior to real estate, so I am well-versed in the "art" of frangrance testing and cosmetic wizardry of all sorts.  It's a fascinating business.  It will be interesting to see the adjustments that are likely to take place now.

Of course, my experience is largely limited to the profession not as a participant.

Hi Michael,

I don't think I could start a day without that "jolt" from a cup of coffee.

The quote is a nice wake-up call too.

While early on, I was a Coke in the morning person. I think it might be a "Southern" thing. Nowadays, coffee does the trick.
