The idea of a Father's Day holiday was first concieved by Mrs. John B. Dodd, of Spokane Washington in 1909. She wanted an honored day to remember her father William Smart, a Civil War veteran. He was widowed after his wife died in childbirth with their sixth child. As a widower. he single-handedly raised their children on a farm in eastern Washington state.
Mrs. Dodd desired to have this holiday celebrated on her father's birthday, the first Sunday in June however the Spokane council couldn't get that to pass and designated the third Sunday in June as the day for the city's celebration on the holiday. At about that same time, many towns and cities across the country were celebrating similar days, most in June as well. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge backed the idea of a national holiday for the same purpose, but it was not until 1966 when President Lyndon Johnson actually signed a proclamation officially declaring the third Sunday in June as the national Father's Day.
The official flower of this holiday is the white or red rose just as is true for Mother's Day. Mrs. Dodd was the one who suggested that people wear a white rose to honor a father who was deceased and a red rose for a father who was living.
Have a GREAT FATHER'S DAY weekend and thank God for your Father this weekend!
