Long Island New York consists of two counties, which are Nassau County and Suffolk County. It also has two cities which are Long Beach and Glen Cove.
Long Island also has many local Towns, Villages and Hamlets too.
By the way, Long Islander's never say we live "IN" Long Island, but we live "ON" Long Island...
- County: A County is a municipal corporation, a subdivision of the state, established to bring about state functions. All counties are divided into cities, towns and some Indian reservations too.
- Town: A Town is a municipal corporation and comprises all locality within the state except those that are within cities or Indian reservations. Towns can also be sub-divided into Villages and Hamlets.
- Village: A Village is a general purpose municipal corporation that was formed voluntarily by the residents of an area in one or more towns to provide themselves with municipal services. The pattern of village organization is similar to those of a city. A village is divided into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas.
- Hamlet: A Hamlet is an unincorporated area in one or more towns that is governed at-large by the town it is in. A Hamlet is divided into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas.
- City: A City is a unique government entity with its own special charter. Cities are not sub-divided, except into neighborhoods which are informal geographic areas.

In Nassau County we have three towns - Oyster Bay, Hempstead, and North Hempstead. There are two cities in Nassau County which are Long Beach and Glen Cove.
In Suffolk County there are ten towns - Babylon, Brookhaven, East Hampton, Huntington, Islip, Riverhead, Smithtown, Shelter Island, Southampton and Southold. Also, there are two Indian reservations called the Poospatuck and Shinnecock. Plus there are local Villages and Hamlets within these Towns and just too many to mention.
