Long Island Towns, Hamlets, Villages | Whats The Difference

Just In Case You Were Wondering...

Long Island New York consists of two counties, which are Nassau County and Suffolk County. It also has two cities which are Long Beach and Glen Cove.

Long Island also has many local Towns, Villages and Hamlets too.

By the way, Long Islander's never say we live "IN" Long Island, but we live "ON" Long Island...

  •                   County: A County is a municipal corporation, a subdivision of the state, established to bring about state functions. All counties are divided into cities, towns and some Indian reservations too.

  •                   Town: A Town is a municipal corporation and comprises all locality within the state except those that are within cities or Indian reservations. Towns can also be sub-divided into Villages and Hamlets.

  •                   Village:  A Village is a general purpose municipal corporation that was formed voluntarily by the residents of an area in one or more towns to provide themselves with municipal services. The pattern of village organization is similar to those of a city. A village is divided into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas.

  •                   Hamlet: A  Hamlet is an unincorporated area in one or more towns that is governed at-large by the town it is in. A Hamlet is divided into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas.

  •                   City: A City is a unique government entity with its own special charter. Cities are not sub-divided, except into neighborhoods which are informal geographic areas.

Long Island New York

In Nassau County we have three towns - Oyster Bay, Hempstead, and North Hempstead. There are two cities in Nassau County which are Long Beach and Glen Cove.

In Suffolk County there are ten towns - Babylon, Brookhaven, East Hampton, Huntington, Islip, Riverhead, Smithtown, Shelter Island, Southampton and Southold. Also, there are two Indian reservations called the Poospatuck and Shinnecock. Plus there are local Villages and Hamlets within these Towns and just too many to mention.

Nassau County:

 Town of Hempstead

 Town of North Hempstead

Town of Oyster Bay

Suffolk County:

 Town of Babylon

Town of Brookhaven

Town of East Hampton

Town of Huntington

Town of Islip

Town of Riverhead

Town of Shelter Island

Town of Smithtown

Town of Southampton

Town of Southold

And then in each of these Towns there are many Hamlets

Hello Sheila and Larry - I like this explanation.  Very clear. It's interesting, to me, to see how different areas have established community designations.  Of course, I find this sort of thing quite fascinating.  Yes, I know I am far from normal.

I have even bookmarked this post so I can revisit it if the question should resurface in my mind.

This post has some excellent material for trivia questions. Dolores is from Staten Island but could not identify both of your counties and both of your cities.

Very interesting information, I know Pennsylvania is a commonwealth, and we also have many, many, many municipal designations, some self governing, others subject to different rules and regulations. Don't thinki I have ever been to Long Island.

Great information, Sheila and Larry... learned something new today about Long Island... although I already knew it was "on" Long Island, not "in" Long Island.

Nick, From reading your blog I know that you like to travel. You must have some amazing stories.

Nina, That's right. We live "on" Long Island. Very Sharp!

Brian, Many agents working on Long Island don't know the difference either...

Well that was very informative to me who has no clue.  Here I thought Long Island was the whole island!  But I totally get the part about living ON the island and not in it.
