Blogging and Friendship
Priceless if you did not see this the first time around. Check it out now.
Blogging and Friendship
We all got started with blogging for a variety of reasons. And we probably had different expectations of what blogging would do for us and our real estate businesses.
Some might also have had some thoughts about personal benefits – doing something we enjoy, increasing our knowledge, and improving our communication, for example.
But I wonder how many of us expected to develop the friendships we now have as a result of blogging, or started with that intent? I certainly never expected it, or even gave it any thought when I began blogging.
“True friendship comes when the silence between 2 people is comfortable” - David Tyson
I’m not referring to casual relationships with others – no doubt we all have many - but something we would consider a true friendship, however you might personally define that. Trust? Mutual liking? Respect for each other and for your differences? Someone you want to spend time with? The list of what makes a friendship goes on!
Some friendships have evolved into deep ones, or will, over the years, and extend beyond blogging into much more personal aspects of life. Others may be more casual – valued, certainly, but maybe not as close and personal as other friendships. But that depends on the friends!
“A friend is someone who understands your past, believes in your future, and accepts you just the way you are.”
– Unknown
Is meeting face to face essential for establishing or maintaining a friendship?
I don’t think so, although in person certainly takes the relationship to a new and different level when it happens. Even better if it can happen multiple times. No doubt there are many here in our community who have become friends and have not met, and maybe never will!
I remember way back when I first got started here in 2006 how many people seemed to already be friends with each other. The relationships, and the friendships in the AR community were pretty obvious…you could tell by the comments that they made on each others’ posts, and the interactions.
And it was such a cool experience to start feeling I was becoming friends with some people only through our blogging and engaging online.
I remember the first blogging event I attended in Long Beach way back in February 2007 (you can read about the rain in Long Beach here). It was such a blast to meet people I felt had become friends in some way in just the few months since I had started blogging. And then to meet even more friends at the 1st birthday party in July in Long Beach, CA June 10, 2007.
“The real test of friendship is can you literally do nothing with the other person? Can you enjoy those moments of life that are utterly simple?”
– Eugene Kennedy
Then there were the Bloggers Connect meetings that many Rainers from around the country attended (Bloggers Connect #2 July 2008 in San Francisco). And later, multiple ActiveRain RainCamps around the country many are familiar with, numerous RE BarCamps in different cities, and of course loads of meet-ups around the country over the years.
Plus we hear plenty of stories of people just getting together with others they know and are friends with when traveling, or making trips specifically to visit their friends!
Our blogging friendships evolve over time, and deepen as we read each other’s posts and get to know each other better, comment back and forth, and interact and stay in touch on other social media sites. We text, email, send cards, call sometimes for no reason, share referrals, help and support each other and comfort when needed. And most thankfully, we sometimes have the great fortune of meeting each other in real life.
Blogging and friendship…it's priceless!
“One measure of friendship consists not in the number of things friends can discuss, but in the number of things they need no longer mention.” – Clifton Fadiman
