Flag day...a respectful reminder..

I love living in the great northwest. Bellingham is a great place to have a business, with a view of Mt. Baker to look at everyday.

This Saturday is Flag day. A day to remember our country. The forfathers that bagan a government run by the people and for the people, a belief in god, country, liberty and the pusuit of happiness.

A day to honor our young men and woman, serving in the Armed Forces.

So why is it that alot of bordering towns are flying the Canadian Flag along side our American Flag? Now don't get me wrong, I love going to Canada.

When I go to Canada, it is to visit their country, there diversity and food, museums, lifestyles and people. I appreciate that they let me visit and partake in their culture. And that is the beauty of visiting other countries.

So why is it that hotels, motels and some businesses are flying the Canadian flag right next to ours? Are we ashamed of our country, or is it all about manipulating people for the almighty dollar?

As a dual American/Canadian citizen, I can say that a lot of "expats" living here in America fly both flags as a symbol of solidarity and love for both countries. Bellingham, being so very close to the border (I visited there last year, nice town!), may just have an excess of Canadians wishing to show their loyalty. Or maybe it's the shopowners way of thanking citizens of both nations for the commerce brought to their establishments. Either way, I don't think anybody who would fly the American flag as well as the Canadian should be interpreted as being ashamed of their country.

January Oh, I absolutely am not saying anyone should be ashamed...they should be proud of their country, or leave it and go somewhere else. But when I went to South korea, I didn't expect  to see them flying a US flag, nor would I expect to see canada flying a US flag. I didn't see Mexico flying our flag the last time I visited. I like Canada for the diversity and differences.

Here we are suppose to fly the US Flag above all others, then the state flag, and then any others, like a county or city flag.

Showing respect, solidarity and welcoming others can be done in lots of ways. But a flag is to represent your own country.

I just feel that it is more of a "we want your money" scheme and has nothing to do with the company showing solidarity....and to me....THAT is showing disrespect to the people of Canada....."we just want to manipulate you and do whatever it takes to get your money too" should be the real sign.
