When a Buyer looks for a mortgage specialist to help finance their new home purchase, they really seem to look to their home bank or shop for advertised rates. This could be a huge mistake. As a Real Estate professional I have had the pleasure to work with many great loan officers, and a few not so great.
Buyers should listen to their agent's recommendations for mortgage companies. We offer names of companies that we have worked with in the past and have good success with. I can tell you that a good rule of thumb is to work with someone local.
I have a horror story with a client that chose a mortgage lender 2000+ miles away. The lender did not understand local requirements and ended up delaying the closing for 4 weeks due to their ineptness. They almost killed the deal.
On the other hand, I am closing a deal tomorrow with a trusted loan officer. She had all documents completed more than a week before closing and the loan package is already at the closing attorney's office. Beyond that, she has communicated well with their client and the agents involved. What a pleasure to work with her.
So, if you are looking to buy a home in the near future, ask your agent about mortgage companies they like. It will serve you well in the end.
