Memorial Day is an important day and solemn occassion for displaying the American flag as a gesture of thanks and respect to those in the military who gave their lives for the freedom U.S. citizens enjoy today.
I first learned about the United States Flag Code as a girl scout in Willow Glen, part of San Jose, Calif. In our troop, we learned and taught others the appropriate handling, times of day and folding techniques required to show the appropriate respect for the American Flag.
For those who are new to displaying the flag, please read the United States Flag Code before use. For questions on American Flag etiquette, visit the American Flag Foundation. Many of the important points, especially for Memorial Day, are covered below.
Display the Flag Respectfully on Memorial Day
-
Specific to Memorial Day only: Raise the flag to full mast and then lower to half mast until noon. Doing so honors those who have given their lives in service for our freedoms. At noon, raise the flag to full mast for the rest of the day.
- The American flag is first displayed at sunrise, and retired at or before sunset. A flag may be kept flying 24-hours a day as long as it is illuminated during the night.
- Appropriate positioning is with the blue square at the top-as in the illustration. (The exception is in times of distress.)
- Flags on display should be in good condition. When a flag becomes tattered or worn, it should be respectfully retired. Contact a local Veterans of Foreign Wars office, Boy Scout Troop or Trail Life Troop for assistance with correct flag disposal.
A huge debt is due to all military personnel who have served America, both past and present. Memorial Day is a proper time to say thank you.
