Soundtrack of a Lifetime - 2020 Redux, Day 5 - Springsteen

Here is a redux of a lost 2020m blog post. Enjoy!

I must admit that I was never really a big Springsteen fan. I suppose that when he was releasing his most popular music, I was listening to something else. But who can deny the impact that “The Boss” has had on rock and pop throughout the ‘70s and ‘80s?

I also freely admit that when I was working in New Jersey in the ‘90s I felt compelled to make a pilgrimage to Springsteen’s hometown of Freehold (although most people think he grew up in Asbury Park). Monmouth County has now created an historical exhibit “Springsteen: His Hometown” to pay tribute to his contributions to the area.

Springsteen and the E Street Band’ s breakthrough album was released in August 1975. It was widely acclaimed and with the help of a huge media blitz, Springsteen appeared on the cover of both Newsweek and Time magazine.

Springsteen is probably best known for his album Born in the U.S.A. (1984), which sold 15 million copies in the U.S., 30 million worldwide, and became one of the best-selling albums of all time with seven singles hitting the Top 10.

The title track Born in the U.S.A. is an often-misunderstood protest song. The lyrics are a bitter commentary on the poor treatment of Vietnam veterans. But the music and the chorus resonated with people that viewed it solely as a patriotic anthem. Nevertheless, the song made a political impact, as he was advocating for the rights of the common working-class man. Perhaps because of his New Jersey roots. Springsteen always identified with the working class or common man.

Springsteen was a Kennedy Center Honoree in 2014.

But the biggest hit from the album wasn't the single Born in the U.S.A. It was actually today’s song, Dancing in the Dark which reached #2 on the Billboard charts. It is also one of my favorites.

Funny, I have been thinking about Springsteen the last few days as part of my music postings. Thanks for the history, you do a much fuller job than I do.
