Susanna Hall

Susanna Hall was born in Stafford-upon-Avon back in 1583 to William and Anne.  At the time girls were not allowed in school, however it is believed that her parent taught her how to read and write.  In 1607, she married John, she was 24 and he was 32.  Her father had left her a dowry of 105 acres in Old Stratford.

The union produced their one and only child Elizabeth in 1608.  In 1611, a man by the name of John Lane accused Susanna of adultery.  Susanna filed a slander suit against Lane.  It took three years before the suit was in front of the courts, Susanna won and Lane was found guilty of slander and excommunicated.  Her father died in 1616, because no male heirs were born the entire estate was hers.  She died in 1649, she was 66.

What you may not know about Susanna is that her father was none other than William Shakespeare, yes that William Shakespeare.

Hello James - as I started reading your post with some initial information, I thought there might be a Shakespeare connection and like a good story, a plot twist-of-sorts provided more details.

Who knew that Shakespeare was a man of the land... that's what I find most interesting James Dray . I've always imagined him with a pen in hand day and night. Now I see him as a man working the land and dreaming about scenarios that turned into plays. It reinforces my thought that men of the land ARE deep thinker's and not bumpkins some make them out to be.

Of course there is still a lot of discussion about who Shakespeare really was and if the works were truly written by Shalespeare or someone else. But interesting history.

certain writers made me realize the beauty of language. My two favorites were Shakespeare and Walt Whitman. (his life is worthy of an entry) :):):)

When I read Stratford-Upon-Avon, I suspected that the story of Susanna Hall would included William Shakespeare.
