I finally had the opportunity to go to this terrific store yesterday.

Tip Top Meats and European Deli has been around Carlsbad for years, ‘bout 25 I think. It gets written up all the time, and people I know who have been there rave. Well I now can see why.

Fresh meats at Tip Top Meats Hmmm - jellied tongue?

I’m not sure that there is any meat or poultry that isn’t in this store (like elk? How about ostrich? Squab?), plus a myriad of other delicacies – bottled, canned, frozen, and fresh. In addition to the fresh meats, poultry, sausages and deli delights, they have aisles of gourmet food items from around the world.

Tip Top Meats also has a restaurant, including an outdoor dining area. The fare is somewhat what you would expect of this type of place, and the German influence is strong. I haven’t eaten there but friends exclaim over the menu, the large portions and the very reasonable prices.

Huge cooler just of soup bones Meats galore

Need a place to buy an unusual type of meat (great prices, BTW) or some terrific food items for a picnic or party? Tip Tops Meats is THE place to go. They are located on Paseo del Norte, between Poinsettia and Palomar Airport Road, about a mile from the 5 freeway. You can’t miss the bright blue awnings.

LOL .......... Jeff.

All I could think of when I saw the packaged "Jellied Tongue" was a Sanford and Son episode where Lamar was cooking tongue for dinner and Fred comes walking in to the kitchen and asks what was in the pot.  When Lamar told him that it was tongue he made this real ugly face and told him that there was no way that he was going to eat something that had already been in someone else's mouth.  So Lamar asked him what he wanted to eat instead?  Fred looks very seriously at him and says .......... oooooh .......... just fry me up a couple of eggs ............. LOL

I wonder where he taught those came from ............ LOL

Hi Jeff, George's comment was priceless and so funny. But true. I am the squimish one though and probably would have answered the same way that Fred did, lol. Life in America, you cna't beat it. There is something for everyone , plus a few things that I am sure nobody wants.

Hi Jeff,

This looks like such a great place. I loved your first comment. I was thinking to myself, boy I haven't had any jellied tongue for a very long time.

Jeff, as a guy I have to think to myself... meat... good... dinner is coming up quickly.. as an agent and as someone in sales, I have to think, what a great idea. Offering to do this and branding them just slightly would be a great way to get yourself out in the community and possibly get some great publicity. Great idea!

Jeff, your article on Tip Top Meats in Carlsbad reminded me of this place called Hans Mueller's in NW Dallas that had a German restaurant attached to it. These places are very hard to find as the Super WalMart grocery stores take over the world. It's nice you've still got one in your backyard and you highlighted all they have to offer.

Akin to George's comment, my mom used to cook many parts of the cow when they ordered a side of beef for the freezer. One of those parts was tongue. Years later, I decided to cook one. Had a real nosey friend who happened to stop by while it was cooking. She lifted the lid and the expression on her face was priceless. She left my pots alone after that!

Must say I've never had it jellied.

George - THAT was a great story. Never saw that particular episode but it sure makes you think.

William - how true. I have watched Anthony Bourdain a few times and there has been some food on his show that I wouldn't put near my mouth.

Lynda - well I have never had it and I ain't startin'.

Thanks, Stephen. I had to stop in to buy some things fro our picnic for the JAzz Festival so it was a perfect opportunity.

Gary - places like this are real gems, and unfortunately few and far between.

Elaine - LOL. Good story. That;s the way to keep the nosey folks from snooping. And as for tongeu, well see my comment to Lynda.
