We know that a clean home is a happy home, but during the COVID-19 pandemic, a clean home is a happy and healthy home! This year, homeowners aren’t just doing the usual spring cleaning, they’re breaking out the heavy-duty cleaners and scrubbing their homes from top to bottom. Whether you want to deep clean your home because of COVID-19 or you’re just trying to find things to keep yourself busy, check out these DIY cleaning tips!

If you want to make your cleaning adventure a little easier, we have 6 spring cleaning tips and hacks that will save you money and elbow grease!

1. Natural cleaners work too!

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, folks have been stocking up on Clorox, Lysol, and other antibacterial cleaners to disinfect their homes. So, what do you do if you can’t find these cleaning products? Use natural ingredients to make your own! For example, combine one part white vinegar with one part water and you’ll have an all-purpose cleaner you can use anywhere in your home. If you don’t like the smell, add a drop or two of citrus essential oil for a fresher scent.

2. Hydrogen peroxide disinfects common germs

If your kid likes to share their toys with others, wipe the toys with some 3% hydrogen peroxide on a cloth. You can use peroxide on common household items such as dishwasher and refrigerator handles, doorknobs, and even lunch boxes.

3. Pillowcases can be used for more than sleeping on

Ceiling fans can be a pain to clean, especially if there’s a lot of dust on the fan blades. No one likes dusting the fan blades because the dust particles just fly everywhere! You can eliminate this problem by sliding a pillowcase over the blade. The pillowcase will contain the dust and when you’re finished cleaning, you can turn the case inside out over the garbage can to remove the dust and then toss it in the washer. Easy peasy!

4. Keep cleaning supplies in an easy to carry container

There’s nothing worse than cleaning a room and you realize you forgot the Windex or your disinfectant spray is nearly empty. We like to store all of our cleaning supplies in a handy carrying tray or bucket so we can go room to room with everything we need on hand. Also, be sure to take stock of your cleaning supplies after you’re done cleaning so you can restock before running out.

5. Let disinfectant cleaners dry thoroughly

Did you know that you’re supposed to let disinfectant cleaners dry on the surface instead of using a cloth to wipe the surface clean? We didn’t either! Disinfectant sprays will kill 99.9% of germs and bacteria, but you have to let it dry completely for it to be effective. So, make sure to dip a cloth in a mixture of soap and warm water to remove any debris from the surface. Use a dry cloth to soak up any moisture. Then spritz a thin layer of the cleaner on the clean surfaces and let it completely dry. After spritzing, you can move on to another task!

6. Rubbing alcohol is a great disinfectant

As often as we touch our phones and other electronic devices, they’re simply covered in germs and bacteria! You can clean and disinfect them by using rubbing alcohol (70% strength and up) on a cloth to get rid of any germs and bacteria. Just be sure that you don’t saturate the cloth or paper towel because you don’t want to ruin your device!

No one knows when life will get back to normal. There’s no clear timeline of when the country will reopen and these safety precautions will be relaxed. However, as a homeowner, there are things you can do to keep your family safe and healthy — that is cleaning and disinfecting your home.

We hope these tips will give you some reassurance during these uncertain times. We also want you to know that we are here for you if you want to buy or sell a home.. For more info on how to do this safely during this time of COVID, just CLICK HERE to see all the things we do to help keep you safe!
