About Camano
Camano is conveniently located only 55 miles north of Seattle by bridge. With over 56 miles of pristine beaches, Camano is located in the Olympic rain shadow; consequently, we receive only 17 to 20 inches of rain annually.
The East Side features panoramic views of Mt. Baker, Mt. Rainier, the Cascade Mountains and quiet Port Susan.
The West Side features unparalleled sunsets and boat traffic through Saratoga Passage to LaConner and the San Juan Islands. Boating, salmon fishing, clamming and crabbing are bountiful on Camano.
History Camano Island's first European settlement occurred in the 1860s as logging became a major endeavor. The Island's abundantDouglas Fir and easy salt water access resulted in large scale milling operations. Trading and shipping were also important, especially around Utsalady, "Camano City", and Mabana. In more recent decades, Camano has been known first as a resort and vacation area and even more recently as a "bedroom" community and retirement haven. However, as Camano's population continues to soar, more commercial retail outlets have begun to develop.
Geography Ranging from less than 1 mile to over 7 miles in width and almost 18 miles in length, Camano Island boasts 56 miles of shoreline. Camano Island is located in Island County on Highway 532 approximately 2 miles west of Stanwood, 20 miles north of Everett and 55 miles north of Seattle. Altitudes range from sea level to 540 feet.
