Take Action: Go Away!

"Every now and then go away--for when you come back to

your work,  your judgment will be surer."

work life balance in real estate

Your action for today is to schedule on your calendar

a personal day or two just for yourself.

I think one of the most controversial things I do in Real Estate is take Sundays off religiously (pun intended) and weekly for the last 10 years plus. You can not get me by phone, text or email if it is work related. I made this commitment to my family and I honor it so that they trust and respect me.

Guess what, my clients honor/respect it too, because I never deviate from it and I share my Mon-Sat schedule with them Day 1. If you respect your schedule, they respect your schedule. Guess who often has an issue with it? Yep, other REALTORS*

When you truly work efficiently at the office,

play time away from it is guilt-free!

You have to recharge your batteries. You have to spend time with your family, hobbies and yourself. Even your cell phone needs to recharge or it doesn't work, follow its example.

I hope you would not schedule heart surgery with a "7 day per week, all hours of the day" surgeon who gets through his days on little sleep, no exercise, coffee / Red Bull and has troubles at home with his family due his lack of boundaries. A destined for burnout kinda guy. Why do you think your clients would want that from you then?

When you are at work, work like a dog.

When you are off work, play like a puppy!

Design an extraordinary day!

Thomas, I try very hard to take Sundays off as well.   We SHOULD be able to take one day.  I do monitor my phone for emails and calls, but it is not in my pocket all day.

Thomas,

I love Leonardo da Vinci's quote, and we are long time fans of his...You reminded me that next time we are in Milan, we have to revisit the museum dedicate to him...and yes we do take time off every single day, and a whole day at least once a week if not more.  A

Hello Thomas - I also appreciate the importance of this Leonardo De Vinci quote.  Rinse. Repeat.  Both important but Refresh cannot be ignored.

You are a wise man, Thomas. It's all about communication--if your clients and others know, they do respect your boundaries. You have it figured out.

I started to change my work schedule a couple years ago and have taken Wednesdays and Sundays off ever since. Many of my associates advised against it but I did and it's worked well for me. My prospects and clients are informed about my schedule and what impact if any might affect their decision to choose me as their agent.

I simply must produce income for 5 days, so, it forces me to work smarter not harder and I'm more refreshed and excited to achieve my goals and objectives. I'm no longer a slave to my business and for those who are fearful of working less because you night earn less, you won't know how much more productive you'll become until you determine you can do it and simply do it!

You have developed a "habit" that is respected by your clients--that's so rare, esp when many people demand an answer/callback RIGHT NOW.  I hope the agents you work with also don't try to reach you on Sundays.

Mary Hutchison, SRES, ABR lol, occasionally the agents do try, but we still don't connect until Monday. When they bother to give me grief, I smile and reply, "I'll tell you what, if you can get God's permission for me not to go to church, my wife's permission to not spend one full day a week with her AND... you want to work with the exhausted, end of the week version of me...I'm happy to meet you any Sunday."

That usually does the trick.

Thomas- this is a wonderful reminder that there is more to life than  24/7 work. We owe it to ourselves, our family, and our work to allow for some recharging time.
