Sulphur Springs Park Searcy AR where people once visited for health

Sulphur Springs Park, Searcy AR

It's Searcy AR history time again.  This old post card shows a group of slender men at the Pavilion in Spring Park.  (Wonder what a current group of our guys would look like?) The Pavilion, to the best of my knowledge, had a spring with sulphur water which was believed to be great for one's health.  Folks came to Searcy to enjoy the Springs.  The elegant Mayfair Hotel was just a block away, within walking distance to this park.  The Pavilion is still there but the springs have all been boarded up.  The Mayfair Hotel is also still there but does not operate as a hotel anymore.

Any of you Searcy people who might read this blog....please feel free to comment or correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks so much for sharing.  We have a Warm Springs here in GA that FDR used to visit.  I love that history can preserve itself.

Barbara, I have to agree with you that post cards of then and now with regard to how "slim" men are would certainly look very different.

Barbara,

I wonder why they closed the springs, did they dry up?  Let me know.  Thanks

Charles, I like them too.  Blown up on this site makes them easier to see also.

Jim, I love the stories about Warm Springs GA.

Charles, you'd fit in with the "slim" bunch, according to Steve's description of you.  But really....can you people watch without being amazed at the obese people in America today??

I don't think they dried up, Mary.  They are still there to the best of my knowledge.  I think they probably became worried about germs, etc.  We'll have to see if anyone can tell us.

The sulphur fountain at the Southwest corner of the park near the ice house was a double dog dare target for us kids.  I can still smell and taste that water from memory. It was terrible! The smell of rotten eggs was overpowering. The old folks said it tasted good but their sense of smell was probably shot and their taste buds had long since gone south.

I spent many wonderful hours in that park. My favorite thing to do was run up and down the sides of the  paved rock drainage ditch that ran through the park in several location. There were 2 or 3 rock foot bridges across the ditches. There was the library to draw us in for coolness and book browsing. The librarians were all so nice and friendly. If we got hungry, why heck, Yarnell's Ice Cream Factory was across the street with a soda fountain to tempt us with goodies.

Good memories of good times.

Don, thank you for supplying that information about the park.  Heber Springs still has an open sulphur water spring.  My father-in-law Vernon Duncan, used to drive there and fill up lots of bottles of that stinky stuff and bring it home to sip for health purposes.  I think I have a picture of the old library to upload in time.
