Since I first began blogging on ActiveRain since the Fall of 2010, I discovered ActiveRain is unique because bloggers can use this Platform for many different purposes. Examples may include the following:
- Get Referrals!
- Relationship Building
- Get Something Off Your Chest!
- Educate Consumers
- Get Leads!
- Inspire others
- Get motivated!
- Write About Business, Yourself, or Something Else
- Get Your Name and Business Out There!
On the flip side, over the years one discovers quickly that there is a Point System and bloggers have an opportunity to get Points, Featured by ActiveRain, Featured by a Group, or get swooped up into someones Blog Post, for example by re-blogging. What this tells me, in my professional opinion is, Competition is in the blood of people in Sales. But do you have to be an active real estate agent? Someone affiliated with the real estate industry? If you're not even in the business anymore why do points matter? For example, a Newbie can't compete on zero points when someone else already reached 5,000 points. Come On! If when people die or get out of the business, their names and blog posts remain for what may be for eternity. Are you, by nature a Competitive Person?
This leads me to think deeper about competition. Why do people who are retired, no longer active in the business of real estate or even in the business when they don't have a business anymore, still stay involved in competing for Points? Some will say, points don't matter? I digress. If it didn't matter, why continue? If you've been around for some time here on ActiveRain, you may have noticed rants about Point Hogs. So, why are people competitive? What is the difference between writing for good Content or Context versus others who thrive on hope to scoop up points or get featured in Groups?
Let's begin with a good definition of Competitive: "As good as or better than others of a comparable nature." AR makes it easy to earn points when you accept a Challenge and earn points. Challenges are Fun! And let's be honest, it's only human to check the Leaderboard to see how you rank. The dictionary tells us, "If you're competitive, you want to be the best. No one likes to lose, but if you are a competitive person, it will be especially disappointing to see someone else win, get more points, be further along than you on the Leaderboard, or be in the spotlight to proclaim, I AM THE BEST!
Is it a matter of Principle? Character? Personality? Addictive Behavior? Someone here on ActiveRain who is a shining example (for all the right reasons when it comes to Content or Context) is Marte Cliff . If anyone deserves an award for Grammarian or Best Wordsmith, Lexical Analysis, or plain and simple, really, really good with Words and Word Smart that would be Marte Cliff. What exactly is Context?
- Details about a subject matter
- A life changing situation
- A memory
- A backstory
- An anecdote
- Something simple and interesting
- It builds RELATIONSHIPS
Context, on the other hand is INFORMATION. Good context creates meaning, provides useful information, facilitates a different point of view or understanding. Really good and interesting Context connects a a story to the reader and creates a relationship. In other words, it allows the author to showcase their own unique creativity without PLAGIARIZING or posting something of yours on their individual blogs outside of ActiveRain.
Context is a topic using a setting for an idea. Content is the subject matter.
When it comes to Context it is the author who interprets the subject matter. Also, when it comes to Context correct usage of words separates the creme from the crop (or person who copies). Linguistics is King! Content is just a broad stroke of common words, i.e., words everyone in the business of real estate uses.
Finally, in my opinion whether its competition, content or context stick around ActiveRain long enough and you will develop a system, hopefully of your own and write excellent blog posts that you yourself can be proud of. Sound impossible? Be the main Character of your own work and not a copycat. Meow! --- Patricia Feager
