But what makes Apple Valley more special is its proximity to other tourist destinations. Some of these are the historic city of Mt. Vernon, Woodward Opera House, and Historic Roscoe Village.

Mt. Vernon

Established in 1805 by Joseph Walker, Thomas B. Patterson, and Benjamin Butler, Mt. Vernon is the county seat of Knox County and was named after the plantation owned by George Washington. The City of Mt. Vernon is known for its historic aged homes. It is composed of four historic districts. These are Downtown Mount Vernon, East Gambier Street, East High Street, and North Main-North Gay Streets.

Originally the city’s commercial district, Downtown Mount Vernon officially made the National Registry of Historic Places in 2012. Surrounding the public square and extending along the South Main Street, the area showcases structures that date as far back as 1829. Many of the homes in Downtown Mount Vernon have their original architectural features intact. Enjoy real-life exhibits of Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, Art Deco, Federal, Richardsonian-Romanesque, and Greek Revival architecture.

East Gambier Street Historic District is the smallest among the historic residential areas in Mount Vernon. It was home to several local celebrities, among them are US senator Jesse B. Thomas and newspaper publisher Lecky Harper. It was added to the National Registry of Historic Places in 1976.

East High Street Historic District is famous for its several buildings. Some of them are the former Mercy Hospital, the Knox County Courthouse, and the Knox County Memorial Building. It was placed on the National Registry of Historic Places in 1987. Many of the existing buildings found here date from 1830 to 1925. Among them is the Columbus Ewalt House at 400 East High Street, home of the prominent Judge Ewalt.

The North Main-North Gay Streets Historic District was placed on the National Registry of Historic Places in 1990. Some of the most notable residential properties here are the Israel House and the most elite Mount Vernon residence, Round Hill.

Woodward Opera House

The Woodward Opera House is America's oldest authentic 19th-century theater that is still standing. It is located in the center of Mount Vernon's Central Business District. The Woodward Opera House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on October 10, 1975. The Woodward Opera House underwent a 20-year restoration that cost $22.5M and reopened in 2019.

Historic Roscoe Village

An 1830 restored canal town, Historic Roscoe Village is a unique and picturesque village. Here, visitors step back into the story of Ohio’s heritage and are immersed in living history. It is nationally recognized as one of the best places to discover history. Here’s a video that shows why Historic Roscoe Village is a must-see:

A living history tour will let you experience how life was back then in the 19th century. Costumed interpreters and crafters portray the life of those who lived and worked in a town nestled along the Ohio and Erie Canal. Horse-drawn canal boat rides are also one of the main attractions, as well as several specialty shops and a nationally accredited museum.

Apple Valley is one of the few places where outdoor fun, history, and nature come together for a unique experience. Whether you choose to own a historic age home in Mt. Vernon or enjoy lakefront living at Apple Valley Lake, you’ll always live near the best of both worlds.
